Scott Morrison dragged the Liberals to an election win that proved the bookies wrong and disproved seven myths promoted by the media pack:
SACKING LEADERS IS BAD
Commentators claimed the Liberals made themselves unelectable by sacking prime minister Malcolm Turnbull. Wrong. Hed lost every poll in nearly two years, and could never have won as Morrison did.
VOTERS HATE NEGATIVE POLITICS
Morrison campaigned harder against Labor policies than he fought for his own. It worked. Voters got scared about Labors huge tax grab, particularly on negative gearing and franking credits. Scare campaigns work against scary policies.
.....
KEEP CHRISTIANITY OUT OF IT
Shy conservatives may partly explain why Labors vote was lower than polls had measured days earlier. But Labors vote could also have fallen in those final days, after Shorten implicitly attacked Morrisons Pentecostal faith, demanding to know whether he believed God sent gays to hell. Bad timing. Rugby Australia sacked Israel Folau for quoting the Bible saying just that. Labors vote in Bible-belt areas of Queensland and Melbourne was surprisingly low.

Liberals can lose even though they had dead kangaroos voting for them.
You are aware that the “Liberal” party in Australia is the right-wing party, while the LABOUR party are the barking moonbats, correct?
Maybe not.
Australia has a Bible-belt?
Australia is like the US, if you get out of the big cities, like Sydney and Melbourne it’s pretty conservative.
It's "Labor"...c'mon,pay attention! :-)
Lapsed into Canadian spelling. My bad...
Kind of - it’s more it has certain areas that are strongly Christian - it’s not neat enough to really be described in ‘Bible belt’ terms but it’s a convenient phrase.
They also have mandatory voting. It kind of makes me wonder about it. Usually the conventional wisdom is that it would invariably favor the left. But it would also probably favor populist movements.

Do you think the mandatory voting has had a big effect here or isn’t it a factor?

Ping to Australian election stuff.
While I don't know the details of this, even I know that some moves are just too stupid for words and I am guessing this is one of those hold my beer moments.
Because in some parts of the world liberal means liberal as opposed to commie totalitarian. Somehow the anti-liberal progs here stole the Liberal label. Of course they did it when RINOism was already running deep under Eisenhower. WFB used to rail on about this all the time and was quite alarmed that Republicans were silly, soft stupid and not conservatives. It’s taken us a long time to discover that our pet pubbies are as dangerous to us as the left, nay more so. Remember the number of times Ryan manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory just as it was too late to fix it.
Israel Folau (was) one of the best players in the Australian Rugby Union team.
He posted a tweet - based on his Christian beliefs - that included the statement that homosexuals will go to hell.
The media leapt on this and turned it into a ‘hate speech’ issue.
And Rugby Australia terminated his contract for violating their Code of Conduct.
Short version.
Hard to say - I don’t like mandatory voting on philosophical grounds (I don’t believe you should force people to vote, when you can’t force them to be informed) but it does turn out the more quiet voters and that may have made the difference this time.
Isn’t it wonderful? I love Andrew Bolt.
Thanks for the details. I know enough about rugby enthusiasts to know that this was a really dumb move they suckered themselves into.
Yeah. To my understanding you have to show up, but do you have to vote, or vote correctly?
Here in the US supposedly the 10% of dumbest voters who deign bothering to show up supposedly decide all elections, the swing/swayable voters. A sizable % of these have no guiding political philosophy they can express. So it’s not like we are guided by the majority’s deep understanding, it’s supposedly the voters that were swayed somehow.
