You know, that post is so brief and uninformative that it deserves this response:

I think knives should continue to be subject to the law of gravity!

The Governor now has 10 days (excluding Sunday) to sign or veto the bill, or allow it to become law without his signature.

While Gov. Cuomo vetoed the previous two overwhelmingly passed similar bills (2016 & 2017), in significant part due to the opposition of New York County District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. who has championed his prosecutions under the law, even Vance has indicated he will not object to this bill.

Gov. Cuomo’s own Attorney General has come out in support of this bill, saying, “I believe it’s high time that gravity knives be removed from the penal code.”

(BUT ITS ALSO ABOUT REGULAR, LOCKABLE FOLDERS being treated as illegal folders: thats what the majority of tens of thousands of arrests have been over)

Martin LaFalce of the Legal Aid Society, who has written a number of Amicus Briefs in support of Knife Rights Federal civil rights lawsuit challenging NYC’s and Vance’s discriminatory enforcement of the law against owners of common folding knives, said, “this is the most unfair law-enforcement practice in New York state.”

I have a small folded hunting knife in my glove compartment.

Pretty sure it’s legal.

I live on Staten Island (though looking in PA currently) and dont even know our knife laws.

When you live in NYC, ignorance of the laws is bliss :)

Looked it up. Seems if you can flick the knife open, it is a “gravity knife” and illegal. Cops have been allowed to make multiple attempts at flicking the knife open, and one success can result in an arrest.

My Cold Steel Recon 1 doesn’t flick open, but I suspect NY would find a different reason to ban it.

Thanks. Much better.

Cyrus Vance (Jr). That’s a name that’s come back to haunt us.

You can usually “gravity proof” a knife by tightening the screw that secures the blade. It’s a ridiculous law in any case. It doesn’t allow a knife that flicks open with one hand, but does allow a knife with a thumb stud that opens with one hand. Or one that flips with the finger of one hand.

The NYPD Academy actually has two sessions where recruits learn jow to flip open a normal folding knife with a locking blade. It could take the officer on the street seven tries but if he gets your knife to open you’re going to jail. And God help you if you are foundvwith a Swiss Army one hand trekker. I own the Swiss Army rescue knife with glass breaker and seatbelt cutter. I keep it in my car but a good friend on the NYPD told me not to drive with it in the city. Honestly I think Cuomo lets this one die.

I have a switchblade, but I want a fighting knife, I’ll order a Faribairn-Sykes blade. $50 online...and a foot long!

In light of the 2nd amendment, it seems ridiculous that this is a discussion...

10s of thousands of NYers have been arrested on felony chargers for having a lockable FOLDER...

Above comments are correct - cops are taught to nudge the blade open and then flick it, at which point it’s a felony.

Hence this campaign to change the law.

Details and examples at the link.

..but I want a fighting knife,

I have used Cold Steel folding knives for years (yes, they are "fighting" knives.) I never use the current one for anything other than the potential for combat. Even a slightly dull knife can let you down.

By the way, a "fighting" knife is only as good as the training you maintain to be proficient in its use.

:-)

” knife owners carrying common folding knives “

Like a lock blade or a jackknife?

“In Texas you can carry a Sword if you lie.”

And every liberal has one for that very reason.
