Woman Bit by Bear Exemplifies How Useful a Handgun Could Have Been

U.S.A.-(Ammoland.com)-On 31 May, 2019, at about 1 p.m., a woman hiking with her husband on a popular trail near Aspen, Colorado, was bitten in an unprovoked attack by a black bear. She was bitten on the thigh and required hospitalization for a short period.

Most bears that show no fear of humans have become acclimated to humans. Bears that have no fear of humans are likely to test humans to see if humans are potential prey. Eventually, the bears have a good chance of causing harm.

The case illustrates how effective a pistol could be at stopping bear attacks, especially black bear attacks.

The bear had to be stopped, because it had become a danger to humans. If the woman or her husband had been carrying a common pistol, they could have stopped the bear attack and terminated the bear before any harm was done.

The bear was an adult male of about 224 pounds. The woman who was attacked understands the necessity of killing the bear. From kdvr.com:

But she understands why CPW had to put the bear down.

“It breaks my heart, but I do (understand) because in this case, the bear was not afraid. I found out this is a path used by kids, it’s close to the city, thank goodness an old gnarly lady, not a child… could’ve been disastrous,” Jansson said.

CPW found the bear within 100 feet of where it attacked Jansson.

Bears that threaten humans are rare. If they were all shot, it would not significantly impact bear populations.

Pistols have been shown to be an effective when used to defend against bear attacks.

I saw a momma bear and two cubs last week in WV.

She looked right at me and went on her way.

I had a gun, just in case.

I respect the beauty of bears. I’ve come across many and on the two occasions I fired into the air and scared them away.

Exactly right.

If she didn’t have a handgun because of some park or government regulation she should sue the park or government.

It’s negligent to force people to go without protection and then not provide protection.

The gun is the best possible defense.

A comment at the original article said that the poster would have used pepper spray.

IMO that is stupid, it would just irritate the bear and it would have the hiker for lunch.

The gun and good shooting is the only certain defense. Dead bears don’t hurt anyone.

We have a bear that must be 350 lbs orbiting around here. I assume it is a boar because he is so big and has no cubs. He is jet black, shiny coat and looks well fed for a spring bear.

We also saw a female with three cubs a ways off from here. They all looked well fed. Really don’t know what they eat around here, stuff is just starting to grow (10k ft and winter just stayed late)

I don’t go unarmed anywhere around here.

Here in NW Florida we have a lot of nuisance black bears. They wind up in peoples back yards, garages, garbage cans, dumpsters and sometimes even in the house!

BUT, it is against the law to shoot them!..................

Some out of state PETA types ran an initiative to CHANGE THE CONSTITUTION to ban baiting and using dogs to hunt bears. Lots of TV ads showing poor little bear cubs. There was no organized funded opposition. It passed. We’ve had worsening bear problems every since.

There is no effective way to hunt them and few are taken by hunters. I don’t know anyone who has killed a bear by happening upon on while hunting deer or elk. Of course when a bear becomes a problem (and more do every year) government employees will come and BAIT the bear and kill it.

“in NW Florida ...it is against the law to shoot them!”

A friend in Alaska said they can take one black bear per day if they want, but can only shoot brown bears in self defense.

I don’t go unarmed anywhere, period.

Plenty of two-legged critters that are way more harmful and a lot less useful than bears.

Well I’m guessing winter kill. It was a tough winter and it’s just lately starting to feel like spring.
