Justice Dept. issues memo backing Mnuchin’s refusal to give Trump’s tax returns to Congress

The Justice Department on Friday released its legal rationale for refusing to provide President Trump’s tax returns to Congress, arguing that House Democrats want to make the documents public, which “is not a legitimate legislative purpose.”

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin refused to hand the documents over early last month, writing in a letter to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.) that the committee’s demand was “unprecedented” and could “have lasting consequences for all taxpayers.” After getting legal advice from the Justice Department, Mnuchin said he had determined the request should be refused.

Good. There was no good reason to request it, just a fishing expedition by the Dems.

legal rationale

They're talking like the Trump administration is on shaky ground here. I don't think there is any basis in law where Congress can demand the tax return of anybody without criminal chargers or subpoena.

Trumps gotta start fighting back much harder. I'm sure there is boatloads of dirt on Democrats ... enough to make them pause to think.

That or start arresting people involved in interfering with the executive branch.

We don’t need congressional committees to scrutinize the tax returns of everyone on their enemies list. We have an IRS, and as they admitted, over-scrutinize conservatives already.

Why would any Republican ask the Department of Justice for legal advice?

I’d love to see the tax returns and investment history of all members of congress. Let us see how they become millionaires.

The Dept of Justice is supposed to follow the law.

There is no lawful reason to request Pres. Trump’s tax returns.

You and me both. Include the Obamas and Clintons.

I agree.

But why would President Trump ask a federal Cabinet department that has done its very best to destroy him to defend him - on ANY issue?

Trump is wealthy. Why doesn’t he hire lawyers who believe in him and will passionately and relentlessly defend him?

I think because as a president, he needs to take actions as a president, not as an individual.

If he acted as an individual, they would want to impeach him for that.

But I am sure he has the best advisors.

He just has too many vicious enemies too, unfortunately.
