Sentencing looms in Charlottesville attack; man seeks mercy

The avowed white supremacist who plowed his car into counterdemonstrators opposing a white nationalist rally in Virginia two years ago, killing one person and injuring dozens, has asked a judge for mercy and a sentence shorter than life in prison.

Lawyers for James Alex Fields Jr., 22, said in a sentencing memo submitted in court documents Friday that the defendant should not spend his entire life in prison because of his age, a traumatic childhood and a history of mental illness. Fields pleaded guilty to federal hate crimes in March and is set to be sentenced on June 28.

“No amount of punishment imposed on James can repair the damage he caused to dozens of innocent people. But this Court should find that retribution has limits,” his attorneys wrote.

Prosecutors also said that while Fields has a history of mental illness issues, it doesn’t excuse his behavior in a way that would require a lenient sentence.

“Any mental health concerns raised by the defendant do not overcome the defendant’s demonstrated lack of remorse and his prior history of substantial racial animus,” prosecutors wrote.

He's white ego guilty as charged.

Just because that is said among blacks, I don’t recall many instances of it lowering a sentence.

In fact, the Vast majority of the time brutal and fair sentences are handed down.

The HATE CRIME garbage has to go and disproportionately affects white, and let’s be honest, was made for just that reason.

But let’s not look for issues where there aren’t any.

Blacks get slammed with long sentences everyday. And rightly so.

I guess because he has issues it´s OK to plow people down with his car.

He’s guilty of being AFRAID after an enormous, violent crowd started hitting his new car.

He went there to be part of a race riot, and he was part of a race riot. Prison’s appropriate. Maybe too kind.

What about the fact a leftist UNC professor wielding an AR-15 was chasing his car?

A legally permitted rally that was shut down by McAuliffe and the State Police is a race riot?

Yeah, I'd like to know more about whether that was a factor. It's remarkable how quiet the media has been about this trial. George Zimmerman's was televised.

Interesting that Dwayne Dixon admitted to brandishing a firearm on camera and was never arrested for it. The judge even excluded such as being evidence. Nobody from Antifa got prosecuted.

People in both sides were legally open-carrying firearms that day.

If he “plowed” his Dodge Challenger into a crowd of people there would be many dead, not just one.

The facts surrounding what happened was tainted by Politics, including comments from POTUS Trump calling the guy a Murderer before any facts were presented.

Is there a clear unedited Video of what happened? I thought the Kid got in an Accident with the Car in front of his and panicked when the crowd descended upon him. Did they prove it was an intentional premediated act?

Apparently Mental Capacity is only an excuse when a Leftist does something, especially if it’s against a White Conservative or Republican.

Put him away for life. But it’s obvious that a muzzy who did something similar would get 12.5 years. Life is not fair.

In contrast, Antifa member Eric Clanton committed felony assault attacking people with a bike lock and only got probation, and all of the “J20” protestors during the inauguration had their charges dropped for rioting.

Open-carry is legal in VA. Was anyone “on the right” prosecuted for carrying weapons?

I use scare quotes because the entire rally was organized by OWS leftists that nobody on the right had ever heard of. There were no good guys attending, just Antifa and White Supremacists. Proud Boys told their people to stay away, didn’t come close to the rally, yet somehow still became the face of the event.

A stupid defense for what was on that tape. A car barreling down at full-speed in reverse either means this guy overreacted or was a crap driver. Either way, he isnt innocent.

Heather Heyer was not killed from injuries sustained by the idiot defendant's car. She died of a cardiac arrest, as her own mother confirmed (VIDEO). Heyer was grossly obese and a chain smoker. She had a heart attack soon after the crash.

Other folks were hit head on and did not even end up in critical condition.

The perp seems like a complete moron, but it is puzzling why his counsel didn't make this point at trial.

That happened at Berkeley, not Charlottesville. Different rules.

I don’t think anyone has watched the videos closely and repeatedly. He was being swarmed and did the only thing he could. If he had seriously intended to kill he would have steered into the attackers, not into the car in front of him wiped out a lot more.
