Sanders says he backs abolishing Electoral College (Pander 2020)
The Hill ^ | 07/11/19 | Rachel Frazin

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Thursday night said he favored getting rid of the Electoral College.

Sanders was pressed on the issue at a presidential town hall hosted by the League of United Latin American Citizens.

“It is hard to defend a system in which we have a president who lost the popular vote by 3 million votes, so the answer is yes,” he said.

Sanders had previously made similar remarks, but stopped short of calling for abolishing the voting body.

"Presidential elections cannot be fought out in just a dozen 'battleground' states," he told The Washington Post. "I believe that we need to reexamine the concept of the Electoral College."

A number of other Democratic presidential hopefuls including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), as well as South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) have also called to eliminate the Electoral College.

And a recent NBC News–Wall Street Journal survey found that a majority of voters says the Electoral College system should be abandoned in favor of a national popular vote.

The push to consider moving to a national popular vote comes as several Democratic states in recent years have entered into the National Popular Vote interstate compact, an agreement that would essentially bypass the Electoral College if enough states join.

The Electoral College has faced renewed scrutiny from the left after 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election despite winning the national popular vote by just under 3 million votes. President Trump won the Electoral College, though, by a margin of 304 to 227.

Former President George W. Bush similarly lost the popular vote in 2000, but won in the Electoral College with 271 votes to Democratic candidate Al Gore's 266.

They work to abolish the electoral college and we can work to abolish term limits on the presidency. And I don’t care what Paul Ryan creep of the universe says about trump not knowing politics trump could figure out how to win In a popular vote eection

Then they’d change the rules again. Trump knows how to play against people who switch the rules. It’s what makes them so mad and it’s why we elected him.

“Presidential elections cannot be fought out in just a dozen ‘battleground’ states,” he told The Washington Post.

So half a dozen “battleground” cities would be better. Do these morons even pay any attention at all to the manure dribbling out of their mouths?

It just reflects the total ignorance of the Progressives .... the Constitution is just too complex and well beyond the understanding of communists.

Easily done, Bernie. Introduce a bill in the Senate or House to abolish the Electoral College. Have it pass both houses with a 2/3rds majority and send it to the states to be ratified. Let’s see, 3/4ths of 50 is 38, so that means that 13 states can stop this cold. There are 7 states with 3 Electoral votes and 5 with 4 electoral votes and 3 with 6 electoral votes and these states alone could block the effort to make themselves irrelevant in national politics. And there no doubt would be some sates with more electoral votes to also vote no. That d**m Constitution, always getting in the way of Progress.

“the Constitution is just too complex and well beyond the understanding of communists.”

I’m bringing up the Hillsdale College course on the Constitution to anyone who seems clueless.

And the introduction for this constitutional amendment is...where?

I mean, he IS a sitting senator, right? Normal liberal bull - won’t be bothered to live within the nation’s laws.

In other words, California and New York will be the only states that matter.

They don’t think they need an amendment. They are really pushing hard for that Interstate Compact idea where when they get enough states for 270 electoral votes, those states all agree to cast their EVs for whoever wins the popular vote.
