President Donald Trump on Thursday said a U.S. Navy ship shot down an Iranian drone in a defensive action.
Trump said the USS Boxer fired on the drone in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday. The incident came four weeks after Iran shot down a U.S. surveillance drone flying over international airspace the same area, in what American officials at the time called an “unprovoked attack.”
Trump told reporters Thursday that, “The Boxer took defensive action against an Iranian drone, which had closed into a near distance, approximately 1000 yards, ignoring multiple calls to stand down threatening safety of ship and ship’s crew.”
The president added that Iran’s drone “was immediately destroyed.”
Trump said the drone’s approach of the Boxer is “the latest of many provocative and hostile actions against vessels operating in international waters.”
He said the United States “reserves [the] right to defend our personnel, facilities, condemn iran’s attempts to disrupt freedom of navigation and global commerce.”
Trump also called “on other nations to protect their ships as they go through the straight and work with us in the future.”
A Pentagon spokesman had no immediate comment when contacted by CNBC.

One thousand yards is well within range of almost any weapon a drone could carry. Once a missile is fired, it is a much harder target than a slower moving drone. I’d say the Iranians are testing, probing to see what they can get away with. I hope we have nearby fighter aircraft for air cover should s Navy ship suddenly be swarmed.
As a side note, Iran has reportedly made “a substantial” offer regarding their nuclear program in an effort to reduce sanctions. Also, Oilprice.com reports no upward movement in oil prices, indicating the marketplace does not expect a war or a disruption.
iran is a m*slim theocracy. *slam is the law of the land. That means that civilization, reason and tolerance are not allowed in iran. Don’t expect them to do anything sensible.
If they would refer to them as UAV’s instead of drones, people might be better able to form a mental image of the actual size and capabilities of these things.
These aren’t the little 4- or 6-rotor thingies that people strap GoPro cameras on for personal use. They are (or at least can be) lethal weapons.

Meanwhile....... Israel still has all, that is the sum total, of the records of the Iranian nuclear program.
I suspect there may not be an actual viable Iranian nuclear weapons prgram. I suspect it may have been stymied
