8chan Is a Megaphone for Gunmen. ‘Shut the Site Down,’ Says Its Creator.
New York Times ^ | Aug. 4, 2019 | Kevin Roose

Posted on 08/04/2019 4:48:57 PM PDT by miami33

...Moments before the El Paso shooting on Saturday, a four-page message whose author identified himself as the gunman appeared on 8chan. The person who posted the message encouraged his “brothers” on the site to spread the contents far and wide.

In recent months, 8chan has become a go-to resource for violent extremists. At least three mass shootings this year — including the mosque killings in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the synagogue shooting in Poway, Calif. — have been announced in advance on the site, often accompanied by racist writings that seem engineered to go viral on the internet....

Mr. Brennan started the online message board as a free speech utopia. But now, 8chan is known as something else: a megaphone for mass shooters, and a recruiting platform for violent white nationalists.

And it has become a focal point for those seeking to disrupt the pathways of online extremism. On Sunday, critics characterized the site as a breeding ground for violence, and some lobbied the site’s service providers to get it taken down. And Mr. Brennan, who stopped working with the site’s current owner last year, called for it to be taken offline before it leads to further violence....

Isn’t “its creator” the one paying the yearly fee to keep it up?

HE could just pull the plug and shut it down.

But I don’t think an internet site could be responsible because crazy people do crazy things.

People who don’t know how the internet works say funny things.

I am fully in agreement with the owner of the site.

I was an admin for a “non-partisan” website and saw the strangest behavior imaginable. Korean seeded users that were like fake news bots or current Twitter bots. People that made up professions/status and people that did nothing but post awful articles then would never comment or defend the troll bombs they threw in the room.

The site got sold, why anyone would buy it I don’t know. However I would fully have endorsed a shut down if we became known for what 8chan is known and used for.

8chan is the online equivalent of 1,000 people shouting fire in a crowded theater and that’s putting it mildly. Online investigations of people may begin with social media but they should really begin there.

These left wing shooters were likely using Twitter, Fakebook and Google. All of those need to be shutdown too.

Remember?

“If we let the terrorists change they way we live even a little bit? THE TERRORISTS WIN..!”

And yet BEHOLD, how now our lives have utterly changed:

No 2nd Amendment
No 4th Amendment

I’ll check out 8chan’s food and music groups every now and then, when I think about it.

All 4chan/8chan are is a forum where you can speak your mind, anonymously.
The only reason it is so crazy is they are the last places online without suffocating moderation.
Love it there even if I see stuff I would rather not.
Freedom !!!

You support the NYTIMES shutting down random websites based on their value judgments? I don’t care if it’s an Al Qaeda website. We are not going to let the left shut down websites against the will of site owners. That’s an attack on our freedom of speech and the due process protections of our property rights.

And if you reply, “big internet companies can shut down whatever they want because they’re privately owned,” screw you.

NY Times profiled Bill Ayers on 9/11/2001. Complete with a pic of Ayers standing on a American flag. I kid you not.

I looked at the Dayton shooters twitter such non sensical postings and stupid images. Most of his followers were the same.
I actually think some of these sites make people anti-social. One poster kept saying “I hate myself” then she would write another poster “I hate you.” There was no dialogue just a few words and then weird photo posts.

If they shut down 8chan then how will the Q bots function? To where will they go to get their Q posts?

These shooters are fruits and nuts. Nothing can be gained trying to deconstruct their madness.
