A very similar situation led to the creation of the new country of East Timor years ago; they’d spent centuries as a Portuguese colony, and when they withdrew Indonesia invaded. There was just no way people accustomed to Western government could adjust to a Muslim government; I have always expected a similar problem in Hong Kong (though I don’t know whether or not the UN would intervene as they did in East Timor (which was a bloodier occupation/resistance).
PRC China had been the staunch supporter of East Timor’s independence.
UN? Lol. PRC has the veto power in UN.
And little Britain needs China, now it’s the crunch time of Brexit.
I mention the UN only because it was instrumental in creating East Timor. I’m sure Red China wanted an independent East Timor if only to trade without Jakarta’s interference.
