A Muslim man said he feels discriminated against after a Starbucks employee in Philadelphia wrote ISIS on his cup, but Starbucks claims the mistake was just a misspelling, according to NBC News.
Niquel Johnson told NBC News he told a Starbucks barista on Aug. 25 that his name was Aziz, giving a shortened version of his Muslim name, Abdul Aziz.
He noticed about 20 minutes after picking up the three drinks he ordered that the cups had ISIS written on them, the acronym for the Islamic terror group.
"I was shocked at first, and then angry because I felt as though we were discriminated against," Johnson told NBC.
Starbucks told NBC the barista misspelled the name and the company does not believe it was discrimination.
"The customer approached and provided the name 'Aziz,'" a Starbucks spokesman told NBC. "The barista mistakenly spelled it incorrectly."
SNIP
Why?
Bingo, he gets free coffee for life!
This is news.
Sheesh.
He should go to Dutch Bros Coffee.
why didn’t he say “Abdul”?
She’s polite! I would’ve just wrote Terrorist!
“Contending that his statement that ‘there’s nothing going on between us’ had been truthful because he had no ongoing relationship with Lewinsky at the time he was questioned, Clinton said, ‘It depends upon what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is.”
Simple mistake. *SNORT*
I think this is a feel-good story, given that it happened to Starbucks and the dame didn’t get canned.
Free coffee, and free coffee from Starbucks at that.
If I had free coffee from Starbucks, I’d go there many, many, many times a day. And use it to water their plants. Take sips in front of the store, spit it out when lots of people are watching, and then throw it in the trash and walk away in disgust.
If I didn’t have to drive an hour. This place is far too urban.
Because he couldn’t pronounce “Baaaaaaa”?
I actually like SB coffee, but I find it overpriced. One of my favorites is Pilot coffee, and I like McD and Bojangles, too. Panera Bread is also good.
Must admit, I like most coffees.
I usually only go to Starbucks when I am out of town and need some coffee (unless there’s a Peet’s around). I always use a shortened version of my name to keep it simple e.g. “Tom”instead of Thomas, “Rick” instead of Richard, etc. (neither of those examples are my real name, BTW). If I had a foreign name, I would probably just make one up, like “Ed”. Who cares if they get your name right? It should be about getting your order.
Niquel? Aziz? What ever happened to Bob, John, Mike, Stan, Paul, etc. etc.???
With an accent, Aziz would sound very close to Isis. That this is news makes clear the eggshells we are all supposed to be walking on around Muslims —and damned near everyone else-— these days.
I like most coffee—I admit to having no taste.
I hate Seattle in general and Starbucks in particular for political/cultural reasons (I go way back in rural Oregon).
It doesn’t help that I am poor, agree on it being over-priced and have an estranged wife who thinks that Starbucks coffee isn’t quite a human right.
Why?
***************
Normally Starbucks asked for a name when you place an order.
This reminds me of the woman who ordered a BLT with cheese from Subway and they wrote Bltch on the wrapper LOL
Well, that brought back some memories.
