I recently was on the Cold War Conversations podcast discussing my book “GPS Declassified” and my father’s role in the early space program and the invention of GPS.

When some of my colleagues at Texas Instruments were working on some of the first GPS receivers, my fishing buddy and I volunteered to do "on the water" tests on (93,000 acre) Lake Texoma.

It turned out that the accuracy at that time wasn't really adequate for logging and returning to some of our favorite deep underwater fish-holding spots...

We actually had better results combining compass triangulation, the rudimentary depth sounders of the time, and good ol' eyeball and fishing line feedback.
