Tent courts set to open on border for US asylum seekers

The Trump administration is ready to open a tent court on the border to help handle tens of thousands of cases of asylum seekers forced to wait in Mexico, with hearings held entirely by videoconference.

The court, or "soft-sided" facility as U.S. officials call it, is scheduled to begin operations Monday in Laredo, Texas. Another is expected to open soon in Brownsville in the Rio Grande Valley, the busiest corridor for illegal crossings.

The administration introduced its "Remain in Mexico" policy in San Diego in January and later expanded it to El Paso, but hearings there are conducted inside large buildings with normal courtrooms, and the judge usually appears in person.

The policy, assailed by critics for making families and young children wait in violent Mexico border cities, has become a key piece of the U.S. response to a large increase in asylum-seeking families, especially from Central America.

Why would any illegal “Remain In Mexico?”

All of them know they only need to get one foot on American soil to get “Catch and Release.”

“...with hearings held entirely by videoconference.”

Judges won’t be in the tent at the border? They’ll be in their air conditioned office with fridge and mini-bar and nice bathroom? B.S.!!!

Judges created this insurgency, this fiasco. Therefore, judges need to be immersed in the aroma, the warmth, the humanity of what they created.

Just wait, a federal judge in Hawaii will put a Nationwide injuction barring these courts, and any other immigration courts from operating, because....we need uniform immigration policy...yep that’s what’s coming...

How is there no emergency process to immediately overturn an injunction?

So a judge can abuse his power and can pull a Nationwide stunt at 3pm on Wednesday, out of thin air, and nobody can undo it at 3:01 pm?

Sounds like federal judges have tapped into Supreme court type power.

Gotta fix that.

They are shipped back to Mexico (to await hearings) per Whitehouse agreement with the Mexican govt. It was either that or sanctions on Mexico and closing the border to trade.

I’ll be a judge there for free (OK maybe coffee and snacks).

Can stamp “NO” all day long. Will do it as fast as my joints allow.

Re: They are shipped back to Mexico (to await hearings)

Thanks for clearing that up - I did not realize they were already on USA territory.

Not really a solution, though.

About 90% of asylum claims are bogus-denied in the USA.

Illegal immigrants who get caught will just STOP pretending they want asylum.

Why?

Because at least 80% of the people who cross the border and get caught get “Catch and Release” within a week or two.

Only people who have no proof of identity, or who have outstanding criminal warrants, or who have drugs or guns, get indefinitely confined in jail.
