Take Two Aspirin and Call Me by My Pronouns
Wall Street Journal ^ | 12 Sep 19 | Stanley Goldfarb

At ‘woke’ medical schools, curricula are increasingly focused on social justice rather than treating illness.

The American College of Physicians says its mission is to promote the “quality and effectiveness of health care,” but it’s stepped out of its lane recently with sweeping statements on gun control. And that isn’t the only recent foray into politics by medical professionals. During my term as associate dean of curriculum at the University of Pennsylvania’s medical school, I was chastised by a faculty member for not including a program on climate change in the course of study. As the Journal reported last month, such programs are spreading across medical schools nationwide.

Why have medical schools become a target for inculcating social policy when the stated purpose of medical education since Hippocrates has been to develop individuals who know how to cure patients?

A new wave of educational specialists is increasingly influencing medical education. They emphasize “social justice” that relates to health care only tangentially. This approach is the result of a progressive mind-set that abhors hierarchy of any kind and the social elitism associated with the medical profession in particular.

These educators focus on eliminating health disparities and ensuring that the next generation of physicians is well-equipped to deal with cultural diversity, which are worthwhile goals. But teaching these issues is coming at the expense of rigorous training in medical science. The prospect of this “new,” politicized medical education should worry all Americans.

The traditional American model of medical training, which has been emulated around the world, emphasizes a scientific approach to treatment and subjects students to rigorous classroom instruction. Students didn’t encounter patients until they had some fundamental knowledge of disease processes and knew how to interpret symptoms.

Medical education was demanding and occasionally led to student failure, but it produced a technically proficient and responsible physician corps for the U.S.

Well, we can't have Snowflakes "failing" can we?

The zeitgeist of sociology and social work have become the driving force in medical education. The goal of today’s educators is to produce legions of primary care physicians who engage in what is termed “population health.” This fits perfectly with the current administrator-rich, policy-heavy, form-over-function approach at every level of American education. Theories of learning with virtually no experimental basis for their impact on society and professions now prevail. Students are taught in the tradition of educational theorist Étienne Wenger, who emphasized “communal learning” rather than individual mastery of crucial information.

True - education has become a joke, and the Left ruins everything it touches.

Where will all this lead? Medical school bureaucracies have become bloated, as they have in every other sphere of education. Curricula will increasingly focus on climate change, social inequities, gun violence, bias and other progressive causes only tangentially related to treating illness. And so will many of your doctors in coming years. Meanwhile, oncologists, cardiologists, surgeons and other medical specialists are in short supply.

Brave New World.

Medical School in South Africa - coming soon to your medical care and doctor.

Yup. My doctor didn't ask me that during my annual physical. But I have heard from other people that their doctors asked then ALL kinds of questions that had NOTHING to do with their physical health.

There is no such thing as a transgendered person currently.

No doctor can make a person like me pregnant.

My landfriend will never be a sperm donor.

It’s a fraud using cosmetic surgery and hormones.

I've seen it written that pediatricians now routinely ask parents of their patients if there are any firearms in the house. If it hasn't already happened I can see a day when states...or even DC...would pass legislation requiring doctors who get a “yes” answer (or a refusal to answer) to report it to the police.

Student loan reforms are needed.

Don’t feed leftist lunatics.

Reduce the cost of college by cutting out the mental manure.

This seems almost designed to reduce the supply of people who can diagnose and treat what ails you. Maybe AI will do that.

“Doctor, it hurts when I do this.”
“Well, stop doing that!”

This nonsense is what leftists use to discourage conservatives from going to teacher education colleges and then landing lucrative public school jobs.

There is no such thing as a transgendered person currently.

People are now getting fired (or at the very least ordered to HR for a severe reprimand) if they say that at their place of employment.

How many unqualified people will become “doctors” so as to allow them to proclaim they are “diverse”?

Where this ‘Social Justice’ crap is getting REALLY INTERESTING is how it relates to the (relatively high cost) Low Carb Lifestyle (Keto diet, and other, less-low carb diets). It’s now pretty much a FACT that the switch from the high fat (i.e., fatty red meat) to high-carb diets in the US and most Western countries is the root cause of the obesity/diabetes epidemics breaking out in those countries (as well as many non-Western countries). The high-quality old studies showed it, when reviewed again recently, and the newer ones show it. Going to an untested, high-carb, diet was simply a fad, and it is thankfully ending...but not without a fight, a BIG FIGHT!

The PROBLEM now is that going low-carb sends a guided missile right into the entire Leftist agenda, as it pushes animal meat. The Left, as they push further and further, are even starting to talk about OUTLAWING MEAT, due to its supposed harmful effects on the environment, and they have the vegans and ‘animal rights’ types right there next to them. And then you have the ‘social justice’ end of it, where eating healthy (i.e., red meats) is expensive, relative to eating high-calorie carbs. Combine that with Big Food, Big Drug, and Big Medicine and you have a gravy train that is not about to let itself end without a fight, no matter how sick Americans and others get.

All that I can say is that we better win this one...or Americans will become even much sicker than now.

“As for telling a lie ... Your decision to carry a defensive gun is a highly private matter. It’s no one else’s business, so you can decide who to tell. (It should be very few people.). But, sometimes someone who knows you will ask.

Me? I’m okay just telling a lie. I remember what my father told me. “Always tell the truth, because it makes it easier to remember what you told someone. On the other hand, it’s not a sin to tell a lie to someone who is not entitled to know the truth.””

Yep. The teaching colleges were infiltrated by Frankfurt School minions in the mid 1900’s, headquartered at Columbia U. (Gee, who all do we know that attended there?).

Lucrative public school jobs, indeed. With very nice health plans and retirements. Oh, and summers off.

Those that can’t, teach. With every course and every day mapped out for them. With NEA steering them on how to act to remain in the fold. Easily indoctrinated types, in turn indoctrinating our young, naive children.

ACP is not a medical university (like Johns Hopkins). It is a ‘clearing house’ for insurance and government programs.

I remember when I was young, we would go to my family doctor for treatment and injuries (even when we had to be stitched up). For more serious things, we could go to the hospital down which was not too far away, but that was rare.

My father had a health insurance plan, and my mother used to write the checks to the doctor right then and there. The bills were reasonable, and the care was excellent.

The doctor and his two fellow doctors practiced in the same office, and they shared exactly one administrator between them.

Today, there are less and less doctors, nurses, and practitioners - but a TON of keyboard pushers, middle men/women, slackers, takers, and do-nothings in health care.

I know people who work in long-term care for seniors, and they describe a nightmare where everyone is afraid of lawsuits, the orderlies refuse to do their jobs, the managers don't discipline the orderlies but instead hide in their offices, and the nurses have to pick up the orderlies' and managers' slack.
