NY schools first to have 'red flag' petition power on guns

Schools across New York began the academic year with a new tool intended to prevent student suicides and violence: the ability to ask a court to remove a troubled person's access to firearms.

About a third of U.S. states have so-called "red flag" laws, which allow courts to temporarily seize guns from people believed to be a danger to themselves or others, but New York is the first to empower schools to petition a court themselves for such an order, rather than go through local law enforcement.

In New York, school principals are now allowed to petition the court for an "extreme risk protection order" requiring the safe storage of firearms the youth might have access to, such as a parent's gun. Supporters of the law say educators are uniquely suited to pick up on the kind of troubling behavior seen before school shootings, like the 2018 attack in Parkland, Florida, in which an expelled student killed 17 people at his former high school.

With the law so new, though, New York schools are still crafting procedures or waiting on guidance to help them figure out when and how to take action if the need arises. Several school systems contacted by The Associated Press said they're not yet sure what the law will look like in action.

Do they step in each time a student tells a guidance counselor he's feeling depressed and suicidal? What about if a student overhears a classmate talking in the hall or sees post on social media about wanting to shoot up the school? And when should a school still turn to law enforcement, rather than try to handle a petition themselves?

I don't know how much clearer it can get: the Left has a launched a full scale war against the Constitution.

For people who didn't think "Red Flag Laws" would be a danger to our rights because it only affected "those who were crazy", I hope they possess the ability to reevaluate.

The "educators" in New York state now have a powerful weapon against any Conservative or gun owner. Did you kid express the "wrong" political view in class?

No need to call the police. This "law" allows the "educators" to go straight to a 2nd Amendment hostile judge and take away the PARENT'S firearms. God knows what else they will find after the SWAT team raids your home. Maybe you have an "illegal" magazine, or your didn't follow "proper gun storage." Now mom and dad will face 10 years.

I've been saying this again and again folks - it won't stop with guns. The left will "Red Flag" you for being a Christian, for being a "hater" who "oppresses" the "LGBT community." You have "far right" views and are a "white nationalist" who is a "danger to the community."

California just sent a bill to Gov Newsome to expand their "Red Flag" law as well.

Do you have Amazon's Alexa in your house? What about an iPhone with Siri, or Google's Assistant? Guess what? Big Tech is recording conversations in your home.

The next step in the "Red Flag Law" expansion will be that Big Tech will be "required" to "report suspicious or dangerous conversations that could result in gun violence."

I am not joking.

They are so close to achieving their dream of complete tyranny.

All that the schools in New York state have to do now is sit your kids down, and have a "lesson" about "gun violence."

President Trump voiced support for some sort of national "Red Flag" law last month. Since then, he has received serious push back. He is supposed to announce his gun control proposal this week.

The truth is, we are actually barreling towards the brick wall of tyranny with the Left's foot on the accelerator. They doubled down after 2016. They realized they had to step up their game, and accelerate their plans.

I dunno. There are many on FR that are quick to label you a "Never Trumper!" if you point out that Trump banned bumpstocks, and that last month he said supported Red Flag laws and said guns could be taken away with "rapid due process" - and we know what that means.

The NRA and good citizens have been phoning the Whitehouse for weeks. Who knows what will be proposed?
