An explosion occurred at the Vector State Virology Research Center near Novosibirsk . This research center has one of the most comprehensive collections of dangerous viruses in the world.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, on the fifth floor of a six-story laboratory building, a gas bottle exploded during repair work, after which a fire broke out on an area of 30 square meters. The fire is eliminated. One worker suffered. With burns of the second and third degree, he was taken to the hospital.

In Rospotrebnadzor emphasized that in the room where the explosion occurred, there were no biohazardous substances. At the same time, all the glass was broken in the building of the scientific center. In turn, the mayor of the science city of Koltsovo, where the "Vector" is located, said that at the time of repair the laboratory building was not used for its intended purpose. Nikolai Krasnikov said that the explosion occurred in preparation for the paintwork, and also assured that there was no biological hazard.

State Scientific Center "Vector" was founded in 1974. It is one of the largest research and production complexes in Russia, conducting basic research in the field of natural sciences. In the 1970-1980s, the center was developing biological and bacteriological weapons, as well as means of protection against them.

Also, a unique collection of cultures of microorganisms is collected at the Vector - in particular, this is one of two places in the world where the smallpox virus is stored. The center also houses the Ebola virus. Now Vector is part of the structure of Rospotrebnadzor.

Wow first an explosion that turned out to be a nuclear powered missile test that went bad a month or so back, now this... Hopefully No Biological Hazard turns out better than the no radiation released turned out from the missile.

Smallpox and Ebola is housed there oh my. I am not a scientist in the least so I can’t even imagine how one extracts and ‘stores’ a virus.

That sounds like the beginning scene from Resident Evil

Well my first thought was maybe the explosion (and fire) burned up any viruses... but after reading it, that is probably very wishful thinking, especially if just big enough to blow out all the windows in the building yet only burn up a small area...

Only from what I have seen on TV shows, but they always show stuff like that stored in glass vials... which just seemed stupid to me on the surface!

Wow. Did not know this.

“Vector is one of two places on Earth known to store samples of the live smallpox virus. The other sample of the deadly pathogen is stored at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta.” - The Moscow Times

Just realized your article does say it is one of the two places in the world to house the virus...here are some more facts from Moscow Times:

“It completed trials of an Ebola vaccine earlier this year. A Vector researcher died there in 2004 after pricking herself with a needle carrying the virus, raising concerns about safety and secrecy.

A 2016 World Health Organization inspection said Vector met biosafety and biosecurity standards, but inspectors had “requested further work on some issues.”

The former head of Vector vanished in 2017 following accusations of fraud and a Soviet defector claimed in the early 1990s that smallpox strains were moved there for bioweapons research.”

In 1979, the USSR had a similar incident at another facility, that resulted in many anthrax deaths downwind. Someone neglected to replace a filter during a routine filter change.

It was rumored to be a strain tailored to kill military-age men, which is why most of the victims were men and few women or children.

He could be a lying SOS too. How do we know for sure?

Don’t be silly, Mark17. They were just doing a laboratory remodel. Happens all the time with dreary science labs....said no one ever!

I know a guy who lived just half a mile from that place. Near all fatalities were limited to a a nearby barracks of an army motor rifle brigade, a factory and an office building in that very same neighbourhood. One thing all effected buildings had in common is centralized air conditioning. The laboratory was in a rather densely populated suburb with tracts of homes and apartment buildings, at least two schools and day care center. Noone was hurt apart from people in the buildings I said. So maybe centralized AC is not a good thing.

Decor is very important!!

Don’t want the viruses seeing the same drab curtains and paint colors. And OMG who picked out those HORRIBLE paintings?!?

:)

... A Vector researcher died there in 2004 after pricking herself with a needle carrying the (ebola) virus...

That’s why I turned down that vector researcher job that my uncle Vince offered me in Brooklyn!

No hazardous materials in the room...
...or so they say right now. In a little while we will come to the umm er uh stage after which things will be a tad, but only a tad, clearer.
