This is a book review of the book Spying on the South by Tony Horwitz.
This is a book filled with leftist hate and elitist presuppositions:
"Thus, Horwitz’s Narrative demonstrates the left’s tendency to portray the “deplorables” backing Trump as extremist Klansmen and neo-Nazis on a violent rampage, rather than the hospitable, friendly, and courteous folk he admits to encountering on his journeys.
Further examples of the mirror-world of The Narrative: Trump is supposedly a fascist who plans to suppress free speech, while Silicon Valley totalitarians censor conservatives from the Internet in the name of combating “hate.” Alleged foreign interference is undermining our democracy, while the globalist activists attempt to dissolve the nation itself, and Democrats ponder abolishing the electoral college and packing the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, suicide is on the rise in the American heartland, and deaths of despair driven by opiate addiction are diminishing the core of the nation. That’s a story Horwitz doesn’t deign to mention.
For Horwitz and the choir he preached to, America is uniquely evil, alone in bearing the stain of Original Sin they deny in themselves. What right have they, the supporters of abortion on demand, outright infanticide, and euthanasia, to judge the past? How can the preening left that celebrates transsexual delusions and promotes such cultural vomit to children assume moral superiority over Middle America? Slinking cowards like Horwitz and his pal Andrew could only dream of emulating the courage and sense of honor of a Jackson, Crockett, or Lee.
A simple mental exercise might be worth pondering: Let’s suppose that during Tony Horwitz’s journey his car broke down and he could have chosen where that event would occur: an urban slum, or a Southern rural community. Does anyone believe that he would have chosen a ghetto over a Southern rural community?
Horwitz disingenuously states in Spying on the South that he had hopes of promoting a “dialogue” with the inhabitants of a section of the country he insinuates are beyond redemption. But his version of dialogue turns out to be a preachy, one-sided propaganda tirade. It’s not unlike the prissy, presumptuous lectures we’re used to hearing from the leftist intelligentsia, which are applauded by their audience of screeching harpies and effete snobs, circus freaks and weirdos bent on exacting revenge upon the world.
Horwitz’s writing is seemingly driven by a resentment against the institutions that support civilized life, especially the family and the Church, and a perverse desire to “revaluate” all traditional values. Thus, the grotesque is celebrated over the beautiful, disloyalty over patriotism, and all normal attachments are mocked and undermined. Ingratitude is a hallmark of the SJWs, and Tony Horwitz’s obvious disdain for America is particularly ungracious coming from someone who had done very well in a country that he nonetheless resents. "

Missing a key component here and that is the economic stagnation due to factory closings and offshoring.
IIRC the larger article at the link mentions this. I was focused on the elitest atitude that was being addresses also in the article.

When I moved to the Deep South, a “friend” sent me an email about getting my white robes and cross ready. Needless to say, he’s a friend no longer. Unless you live here, you cannot imagine a more friendly, kind environment. Best impulsive choice I ever made. But leftists continue to spread their evil lies.
Yes he did, and good riddance. I think this was a posthumuous publishing.
He represented and his ideas continue to represent what is destroying the US.
Suicide is epidemic among middle-class young people. The more “comfortable” your life, the more likely you are to kill yourself. The more “downtime”, the more likely. They talk about it openly on Reddit.
My friends who have moved South have told me that in many ways they feel like they have come “home.”
These children have been taught by the culture and through the schools from day one that they are “bad” that their cutlure is violent and hateful, that they should not reproduce, that there is no God but their next want and that somehow they need to find all their answers “within.”
They are unmoored from any cultural norm and frankly the result is that the are totally unable to function adequately like the savages who have lost their tribes.
The sins the left have visited upon the younger generations are manifold and they must be stopped.
I subsribed Chronicles magazine for a few years (in late 1970’s early 1980’s).
They deem themselves as Paleo Conservatives.
There are some well read and thoughtful authors that wrote for them then.
My parting of the ways with them was when I realized they were apologists for Monarchy as an acceptable form of government. A position that I find repugnant.
Now that brings a smile to my face.

+1 to that! Mrs Afterguard and I grew up in NW Minnesota, we’ve lived in Tennessee, Hawaii, California, and now FL. We both knew we made the right choice within a month of arriving in Florida. They’ll have to move me out of here in a bag.
I havent seen much of the monarchists in the past 10 or 15 years. Steyn who is a Canadian, speaks of the monarchy too.
We have traded our republic for an oligarchy of judges and tech oligarchs.

I love the south, except for the heat in the summer. Poor Horowitz, I don’t imagine he examined too much interaction between the residents which might have challenged his narrative. I love the door opening, excuse me’s, warm smiles and helpful attitudes among most residents no matter our melanin content.
People are so nice. We’ve made something like 15 friends in the course of a year. We do a lot of volunteering which brings you in close contact to nice folks.
