Joker: Joaquin Phoenix walks out of interview after controversial question about real-life violence

Phoenix was asked by The Telegraph if he thought particular moments in the film "might perversely end up inspiring exactly the kind of people it's about, with potentially tragic results". Instead of answering, the actor walked out.

The debate over violence in film has been prevalent in recent months following a series of mass shootings in the US. Last month, Universal pulled the release of new thriller The Hunt, a film following 12 red-state strangers who wake up in a clearing and realise they’re being hunted by liberals.

Of course it will create mass shootings.

In the liberal social media world there is a terms called "influencers".

People that merely based on their actions make others mimic them.

I’ll see Downton Anton Abbey and Ad Astra instead of such crap.

I didn’t check the link to the article, nor do I want to, but the account I read reported that Phoenix returned to the article.

FWIW, early reviews of the movie, especially of Phoenix’ performance, are very positive.

I don’t always see movies based on comic books, but when I do, I prefer them to be Lego based.

Apparently they didn't have a review embargo against the movie and I have heard it's Incredible.

Even people on Instagram are comparing it to The Dark Knight in terms of Quality.

Last actor (Heath Ledger) committed suicide during or shortly thereafter filming his role as 'Joker'.

Phoenix is the type of actor that would pour himself into that character. Kudos to him.

If movies don’t affect behavior why do they forbid smoking?

"Last actor (Heath Ledger) committed suicide during or

I believe his death was attributed to
an accidental overdose of medications.

Good question. Also, if movies don’t affect behavior, why do companies spend over 3 billion a year for product placement?

“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fracturedsociety. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night...but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

This movie is not at all appealing to me, but Phoenix is a very talented actor.

Because they can.

Why wouldnt you walk out? You are entertainment and someone outright suggests that it is somehow your acting that will DRIVE real people to do in real life what you provide as entertainment. How do you react to that? Actors have never in history been subjected to that kind of insult. Just like the proving a negative false premise “when did you stop beating your wife?” This is “So when did you stop inspiring mass killers?”

We certainly didnt see interviews like this when Silence of the Lambs came out.

Ledger is what made the movie the only very good of one of the Nolan Batman trilogy. I doubt it was playing the role that led him to taking his own life, but I don’t know. I’m guessing it was addiction.

It took guts by Phoenix to even consider playing (essentially) the same character. Comparisons of the two performances will be inevitable.

I’m not a big consumer of movies, but I’m pretty sure a large percentage of movies in theaters and streamed portray smoking.

No it won’t. Influencer culture has been largely debunked. And the Astoria guy was just a punk and was NOT dressed like the Joker, that was a LIE from the media.
