Trump Followed His Gut on Syria. Calamity Came Fast.
The New York Times ^ | October 14th, 2019 | David E. Sanger

Posted on 10/14/2019 3:44:39 PM PDT by Mariner

President Trump’s acquiescence to Turkey’s move to send troops deep inside Syrian territory has in only one week’s time turned into a bloody carnage, forced the abandonment of a successful five-year-long American project to keep the peace on a volatile border, and given an unanticipated victory to four American adversaries: Russia, Iran, the Syrian government and the Islamic State.

Rarely has a presidential decision resulted so immediately in what his own party leaders have described as disastrous consequences for American allies and interests. How this decision happened — springing from an “off-script moment” with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, in the words of a senior American diplomat — likely will be debated for years by historians, Middle East experts and conspiracy theorists.

But this much already is clear: Mr. Trump ignored months of warnings from his advisers about what calamities likely would ensue if he followed his instincts to pull back from Syria and abandon America’s longtime allies, the Kurds. He had no Plan B, other than to leave. The only surprise is how swiftly it all collapsed around the president and his depleted, inexperienced foreign policy team.

And over the weekend, State and Energy Department officials were quietly reviewing plans for evacuating roughly 50 tactical nuclear weapons that the United States had long stored, under American control, at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, about 250 miles from the Syrian border, according to two American officials.

Those weapons, one senior official said, were now essentially Erdogan’s hostages. To fly them out of Incirlik would be to mark the de facto end of the Turkish-American alliance. To keep them there, though, is to perpetuate a nuclear vulnerability that should have been eliminated years ago.

Yeah, riiiiight, NYT.

You folks are sooo out of the closet you’re doing it during halftime, New Years Day, at the fifty yard line.

Get a room, and keep your fake news directed only to others having token educations in useless subjects.

Let those of us who actually design things and make them work keep on truckin’.

With Trump, your superior.

I think if anything this is a communication error or maybe it was a communication trap.

I suspect Turkey told him we are coming in regardless of whether you withdrawal ... what would you do?

What would these critics do?

Go to war with Turkey? I don’t think so, so many critics smoking crack not telling us what they would do.

I’m confused with all of this. The Times people would have been among the leaders calling GW Bush a warmonger for what he did and now they give Trump this kind of garbage for getting out of that area.

Since the Turks are unreliable, I bet the Israelis would be pleased to host the nukes and the troups that go with them...

And if he hadn’t ordered the removal of our troops they would probably all be DEAD now. To what purpose?

I guess all of the Kurds in Northern Syria are dead or will be shortly due to President Trump green lighting the Turks.

Why bother with any more stories or anecdotes now that the narrative has been solidified? Let’s just impeach Trump and get this over with.

You do know the KURDS were watching thousands of them right...and many have already escaped.

Hard to watch prisoner when YOURE BEING BOMBED!! :)

And I should shut up on this topic before I get banned and I DO NOT WANT TO GET BANNED for disagreeing with Trump on ONE issue.

Sensationalism and criticism disguised as news.

I'm sure the idiots writing this stuff would much prefer that the US get into a shooting war with Turkey, or maybe some other member of NATO...

Why post this B.S. from an admitted lying media source? Repeating lies just enforce the lie ( Hitler said if you repeat a lie enough times, people will believe it).

Let’s focus on the truth (and true articles about the lies).
