Public-Health Puzzle: Young People Having Less Sex, Contracting More STDs
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 18, 2019 | Jo Craven McGinty

Posted on 10/19/2019 4:41:56 AM PDT by karpov

It sounds contradictory: Young people, we’re told, are having less sex than older generations did at the same age. But they’re also contracting more sexually transmitted diseases than any other group, and the rates of infection are accelerating at an alarming pace.

Last year, combined cases of syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia reached an all-time high with half the reported infections occurring in adolescents and young adults ages 15 to 24.

The reason for the increases among younger people is likely a combination of factors, ranging from reduced access to health care to riskier behavior among those who are sexually active.

The findings are part of the annual Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Report published last week by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Among all age groups, chlamydia grew to more than 1.7 million cases in 2018, an increase of 3% over the previous year. Gonorrhea rose to more than 580,000 cases, an increase of 5%. And syphilis climbed to more than 115,000 cases, a 13.3% surge. (The number of HIV diagnoses, which is tracked separately, has been largely stable in recent years.)

It’s important to note that the report reflects only a portion of STDs occurring in the U.S. There are at least 35 different sexually transmitted infections, and most—including herpes and human papillomavirus—aren’t “notifiable,” meaning they aren’t tracked by the government.

In addition, the handful of STDs the government does monitor are likely to be undercounted because many people, particularly those who are asymptomatic, may go undiagnosed.

According to estimates by the CDC, one in four sexually active adolescent girls has chlamydia or some other STD, and up to 80% of all girls and women who have chlamydia, a disease that can cause infertility, show no symptoms.

Having less sex, fewer children, but more venereal diseases. Great. Maybe fornication and sodomy were "stigmatized" for a reason.

My guess would be that on the one hand, most young people are “normal” and are simply having less sex because we live in an age when human interactions are difficult (SJW, PC, Social media distractions).

And on the other hand, some percentage of young people use Internet apps for quick hookups. These casual get togethers spread disease among a subset of society which gets a lot of STD cases. And, yes, homosexuals are heavily represented in that particular subset.

Holy cow. I’m glad I’m in a monogamous (faithful, married) relationship.

Maybe they all are comfortable with lying. Great example out there with the dimms.

I think you are on to something. I’ll add a perspective as well, using tick bites.

I get bitten by several ticks every year. No big deal. But I live in KY where the odds of a tick giving me lyme disease are very remote. But if I lived in the northeast, I would want to avoid being bitten even once at all costs. The likelyhood of a tick giving me lyme disease there is MUCH more likely, by a couple of orders of magnitude.

So the analogy is having sex in the 60’s was like getting bit by a tick in KY, and having sex today is like getting bit by a tick in the Northeast.

I’m thinking it’s gonorrhea of the throat.

Gah.

How does an alleged reduced access to health care increase a young person’s chances of acquiring an STD?

Apples and oranges. Are there actual persons having less sex and more STD’s, or are they just juxtaposing two unrelated data sets and then naming the group.

Or does this have more to do with PrEp, the pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV....

They cannot show less STDs in the straight sex group for fear of losing their grant money.

Kids aren’t taught basic hygiene anymore.
Have friends who’s kids are wrestling in school and forever getting ringworm and herpes from the other wrestlers who just refuse to shower before and after the matches.
Talked to one boy who told me his parents told him he didn’t have to wash his hands after peeing, like girls do.
Was in Sheets using the bathroom and saw a young employee come out of the stall and go straight out to work, MAKING SANDWICHES!
I called the manager over and told him. He thanked me and went right back to what he was doing, without fixing the problem.
That was the last time I went to Sheetz, for anything!

I wash my hands BEFORE I go pee. My little buddy is cleaner than my hands andlI know where its been. I was also taught not to pee on my hands.

I have made the suggestion before, but it has been awhile. Maybe we should require warning labels for STD's. I'm thinking of a visible facial tattoo, with a color coded icon for each individual STD. Why not? We require labelling for just about everything else.

The labels need to be visible enough that they are legible under poor lighting conditions when viewed through beer goggles. They should also be immediately visible so that people can evaluate potential partners early in the game. Something discreetly hidden where it will be seen only when undressed does not provide adequate warning. The label should be easily visible on first meeting. Perhaps the back of the hand rather than a facial marker could work.

There would be an initial period of embarrassment while society adjusted to the new rules, but I have no doubt that this would quickly and massively reduce the spread of STDs. It would clarify other issues as well. We would have certain celebrities, movie stars and politicians whose faces look like NASCAR drivers' jackets. People could draw their own conclusions and make better choices about their affinities.

Especially when so many places give away condoms.

They don’t lack healthcare, they get it from their colleges for free. Shame has always been a major reason.

Then we now have drugs that treat the STD’s, just give a fake name.

There are NO less rapes either.

Another comparison...

With a six-chamber revolver, you’d have a better chance of surviving a one trigger-pull game of Russian Roulette than you’d have of getting an STD from a sexually active adolescent girl.
