Almost all political tweets come from just 10% of Twitter users

Twitter users who disapprove of President Donald Trump are especially prominent on the platform, Pew Research Center finds.

There's no question that Twitter plays a major role in US politics, particularly with its policy of letting world leaders like President Donald Trump tweet what they want, even if those tweets violate the tech giant's rules of engagement. But only 22% of Americans actually use Twitter, and of those, most political tweets are coming from a very small number, according to a Wednesday report from the Pew Research Center.

Pew analyzed the tweets of more than 2,400 random US adults with public Twitter accounts from June 2018 to June 2019, as they produced more than 1.1 million tweets. While 39% of users studied tweeted at least once about national politics over the year, 97% of the tweets mentioning national politics came from just 10% of users, the study found.

Twitter users who strongly disapprove of Trump are prominent on the platform: These users generate 80% of all tweets from US adults, and 72% of tweets mentioning politics, Pew found. Those who strongly approve of Trump generate only 11% of all tweets from US adults, and 25% of tweets about national politics.

The reason behind this is tied to two things, Pew said. People who disapprove of Trump make up a larger share of Twitter users than the general population (55% vs. 48%), and this group is more likely to tweet about politics than other groups on Twitter.

Most of Twitter is actually:

“Hey, look at this gnarly burrito I was just served at Jose Ole’s on Fifth and Market!”

“ESPN is full of it. The Angels should DEFNINTELY trade Mike Trout!”

“Presenting the CUTEST CAT VIDEO EVER!!!”

If the TV and newspaper media ignored Twitter, it would be dead.

That’s a nice version of twitter...

My version seems to be filled with random follows or comments from single 20 yo girls wanting me to subscribe to their porn channel or the single 30 - 50 something yo ladies wanting a husband. (I filled that job description for Mrs. L,TOWM in 1992.)

I expect nearly all tweets come from 10% of Twitter users.

Why are useless loud voices given more than the time of day? The news showing all the idiots trying to break the law then trying to explain that its not breaking the law because we hate Orange Man, then act like they are leaving it up top us to decide on what they told us....

TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND ENERGY but it keeps the serfs occupied with worry.

Interesting. Especially since I’m on my 6th Twitter suspension (back Friday). No wonder I feel picked on.

But ya know, this implies huge confirmation bias, Dems are in for a shock when Trump wins again.

Ain’t that the truth. On my 6th suspension. I was pulled only 15 seconds after posting a tweet that said David Brooks is the Uncle Tom conservative at the NYT.

Well, when the tech giants are actively silencing non liberals, then of course most of the tweets or other comments will come from those opposed to Trump.

Brilliant.

Dear Pew Research

Nice analysis, as far as it goes. But the statistical advantage of the anti-Trumpers does not factor in the easily detected bias that Twitter adds to the mix.

For example (and I have done this many times) just go to any President Trump Tweet and start blocking the negative comments. Block about 50 or so. You might have to dig through 55 comments to get to 50. That would be typical.

Then take another Trump Tweet and look at the comments. Twitter will show you a little note telling that you can’t read the comment because you have blocked the user,

Say what? Out of millions of users, Twitter picks some of those 50 I blocked to promote to the top of the Trump responses.

You don’t need to be a statistical genius to see that we are being screwed by Twitter.

With 10% of Twitter users posting politically, about 3-4% would be conservative.

That’s why Twitter can effect elections by shadow-banning and de-platforming a tiny percentage of users.

(Just another repeatedly shadow-banned conservative who dared to tweet on occasion.)

Twitter actively promotes Trump haters, and actively suppresses Trump fans. If you click on any political hashtag, you typically must scroll through dozens of TDS hate posts to see a single pro-Trump tweet.

People are just tired of it, which IMHO is the real reason TWTR stock is down 18% today after horrible earnings

[my gut says that paid trolls and bots are the most likely cause of the above ... nonetheless, whatever the cause, this essentially proves what I’ve always believed, namely that the fool Dems have rushed to the far left based on the false belief that this tiny majority of strident assholes is somehow representative of their larger rank and file.]
