When that young female officer handed me the flag that had covered my father’s coffin, I understood what America is.

They presented it to my Grandmother. She went through one of the most difficult things anyone can endure - living to see one’s own child die.

I’ve always been very grateful for the final dignity afforded to my father, who served as a Marine in the Pacific, during WWII.
