49ers Player Surprises School Principal By Handing Him a Check to clear Debts

The San Francisco 49ers may have earned a few new fans this week, but it’s not because of their most recent win on the football field—it’s because one of their players went out of his way to eliminate the cafeteria debt at a local middle school.

Richard Sherman, the 49ers cornerback player, paid off all $7,500 of the outstanding lunch debt at Cabrillo Middle School this week.

Cabrillo Principal Stan Garber had been working as a docent at the nearby 49ers museum when Sherman pulled him aside and handed him the check.

Sherman has his moments of being a clown, but he is actually incredibly smart and can be a giving person.

I always enjoyed calling Richard Sherman "Dick".

This is a pretty classy move.

Guess "Richard" will have to do now.

The IRS will want to add the forgiven debt to the kids taxable income.

My wife does this every year at the local middle school. She’s amazing.

No joke. I worked for a company that paid over a million in taxes because the IRS wanted to come after us for years worth of free services we had gotten, as perks. Rather than hit the morale, the company paid the taxes that we employees would have been responsible for. Naturally, the freebies came to a screeching halt . .

So the message to the school kids (Assuming they are required to pay for their lunch) is....don’t worry about paying your way. Someone will pick up the tab. This is where socialism starts.

Why would there be a deficit for a publicly
funded program?

Gee let me guess...

A gift is not income. What may have been a “freebie” in your company is presumptively compensation because of the employer-employee relationship. Your employer may have intended to be generous, but generosity in the context of employment is compensation. Look up Commissioner v. Duberstein.

Do you feel the same way about church charities too?

So the debt was what was owed by the kids to the school for the lunches their deadbeat parents refused to pay?

49ers gives a little check to the 49th ranked state in education , all in debt, extending its life support, despite its riches and high taxation....

That should be the title.

Where is John Greer when you need him? Kill it already.

Paying of cafeteria debt is the latest fad. Everyone is doing it. Some schools, for some wacky reason, aren’t allowing anyone but the parents to pay off the debt.

It isn’t good. It only leads to more not paying next month. Besides, why should any kid have any lunch debt? It’s not like their parents have to prove they can’t afford the meals so they all could easily be on free lunches.

No kid goes without. If there is a debt, they’re given a cold lunch. Woooooo! The horrors! A lunchmeat sandwich, a fresh fruit, chips (why?) and a milk. And that meal never goes against their payment.

Since all students, no matter the family income, gets free breakfasts and snacks and free summer meals, why continue the reduced/free lunch program? The few who pay for their lunches are being scammed. Just give all meals to them and cut the double dipping of SNAP and EBT.

A nice gesture, but a drop in the bucket for someone making his salary. And why was the cafeteria in debt in the first place?

What's he want, a medal? I was entitled to that food! I didn't *have* to pay it back!

"Do you feel the same way about church charities too?"

Come on...Get real...Church charity is not comparable to a tax payer funded school.

Church charity is not comparable to a tax payer funded school.

Alas, another so called Christian hypocrite mouths off.

That may be a tax payer funded school but it does not provide free lunches to the students. Had you read the article you would have discovered that his charitable contribution eliminated the debts of the 60+ students who have been unable to pay their lunch fees......

But then again, the hypocrites such as you would rather condemn the charity rather than admit there are actually children in need in the inner cities.........
