U.S. Flu Season Has Earliest Start in More Than 15 Years — Driven by Unexpected Virus

There are different types of flu viruses, and the one causing illnesses in most parts of the country is a surprise. It’s a version that normally doesn’t abound until March or April.

That virus generally isn’t as dangerous to older people — good news, since most flu hospitalizations and deaths each winter occur in the elderly. However, such viruses can be hard on children and people younger than 50.

Louisiana was the first state to really get hit hard, with doctors there saying they began seeing large numbers of flu-like illnesses in October.

In both of the previous two flu seasons, the flu vaccine performed poorly against the nasty predominant virus. It’s too early to say how well the vaccine is performing right now, Epperson said. Epperson said there’s a chance the flu season will peak this month, which would be unusually early. Flu season usually doesn’t hit fever pitch until around February.

The early start suggests a lot Americans may be sick at the same time, said Dave Osthus, a statistician who does flu forecasting at Los Alamos National Laboratory. “This could be a precursor to something pretty bad. But we don’t know,” he said.

Gross is pessimistic. “I, personally, am preparing for the worst,” she said.

The influenza appears to hit those under age 50 years old, the hardest.
This flu season has hit unexpectantly early, and normally doesn't crest until Febuary.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

A Wisconsin Elementary School got hit with Norovirus this week. The school is being totally scrubbed by professionals and should be able to re-open on Monday. Something like SIXTY little kids got sick - no deaths so far.

“A common way the virus is transmitted is through close contact with an infected person. This is either directly or indirectly, such as sharing a bathroom, a dorm room or another communal space. Cruise ships, schools, and nursing homes ‘are the most commonly reported settings for norovirus outbreaks,’ according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).”

If you were born in the 50s and lived for over 60 years, you have SOME immunity to most variants of the flu.

But if a new one comes along, you could be in trouble.

Vaccine? Rarely hits the variant.

For protection, I find a daily 5000iu capsule of vitamin D3 to be very effective.

The article did not say what the flu strain or strains are. Do you or does anyone know? I tried to search the CDC website just yesterday and it is harder to find that info than it used to be.

My daughter (33) just got hit really hard by this one; high fever (103+), sore throat, bad cough & tummy issues (made worse by the Z-pack antibiotic). She has an inhaler for asthma and that is about the only thing that helps, also Vicks! The grand-kids & son-in-law also have symptoms, but not quite as bad. DH is the only one in the family who had a flu shot and he’s okay. I got the coughing, sore throat & feeling off, but no fever so far. Weird.
