Kimberley Strassel: Obtaining phone logs of political rivals is a stunning abuse of congressional power
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 12/7/2019 | Kimberley A. Strassel

Posted on 12/07/2019 6:26:13 AM PST by george76

Fanatics can justify any action, and House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff this week demonstrated where that mindset leads. In his rush to paint Donald Trump as a lawbreaker, Mr. Schiff has himself trampled law and responsibility.

That’s the bottom line in Mr. Schiff’s stunning decision to subpoena the phone records of Rudy Giuliani and others. Mr. Schiff divulged the phone logs this week in his Ukraine report, thereby revealing details about the communications of Trump attorneys Jay Sekulow and Mr. Giuliani, ranking Intelligence Committee member Devin Nunes, reporter John Solomon and others. The media is treating this as a victory, when it is a disgraceful breach of ethical and legal propriety.

If nothing else, Mr. Schiff claims the ignominious distinction of being the first congressman to use his official powers to spy on a fellow member and publish the details. His report also means open season on members of the press. Mr. Giuliani over months has likely spoken to dozens of political figures and reporters—and the numbers, dates and length of those calls are now in Democrats’ hot little hands. Who gets the Schiff treatment next? If you think politics is ugly now, imagine a world in which congressional partisans routinely track and expose the call lists of their political rivals and disfavored media.

First we’ll impeach him, and then we’ll figure out what for.

Given the brazenness of Schiff’s production of those records, it stands to reason he is getting them through another, active FISA warrant that allows him to spy on any Republican he wants.

The man needs to be on a rope yesterday.

The Democrats can go after and investigate their political opponents.

That’s no problem, this is about the Constitution and Alexander Washington or something.

No one can look into them though. not unless you want to be in the cell next to Paul Manafort.

"Let’s see what judge issued the warrant."

We won't. It is a secret court. We would need leakers like the Dems always seem to have.

This is not Schiff & Co. This is the Deep State and State Department and Intel swappers. Schiff is just another joker they have fat compromising files on.

Trump is upsetting an empire they spent decades building behind blank check omnibus budget bills. Shadow government is the only government in their charter.

Not too long ago, this would have been a “bombshell.” Now, after the outrageous abuse of power it really is, this action doesn’t even cause a ripple.

"...what judge issued the warrant..."

That's the problem: these congressional committees have their own subpoena power. No judge was involved.

AT&T should have demanded a warrant, signed by a judge. Shame on them.

While the Dems are obsessed with impeaching Trump because he wanted to insure there is no corruption by Ukraine or the Bidens, they outrageously expose phone calls of political opposition in Congress.

Did Schiff stop at grabbing phone records of members of Congress, journalists, the courts??

We demand to know whether Schiff used govt surveillance methods or tax-paid technology to monitor the activity of individuals.....

House Democraps are notorious for employing the shady Paki clan for IT work.

Most of the clan absconded but the mastermind Imran Awan was tried and convicted.

An even bigger mystery than how the Pakis got here and got paid huge govt salaries is how the shady Pakis got visas to abscond.

Did “someone” with a lot of political pull facilitate the visas to help them abscond? Some reports say the Pakis traveled on WH visas.

Could be Schiff is a Cyberstalker.

Cyberstalking is the use of computers or other electronic technology to facilitate stalking.

These are “criminal stalkers” perpetrating crimes against their targeted victims through electronic and online methodologies.

<><> Facebook and Apple have admitted to allowing government officials to access personal information of their account users.

“Let’s see what judge issued the warrant.“

Don’t need a judge. But this gets into a very murky legal area.

Obviously, AT&T is the US version of Huawei. The reason that our government is fighting them is that they hate competition. Going back to WW1, the British made darned sure that they were the best and cheapest at laying telegraph cables...so that they could spy on the traffic going on through them.

I’ll bet that you can’t get a burner phone within a 200 mile radius of Washington DC this morning.

<><> California was the first state to criminalize stalking in the United States in 1990 as a result of numerous high-profile stalking cases.

<><> California also responded to numerous cases of a driver’s information being abused for criminal activity.

<><> The Drivers’ Privacy Protection Act prohibits states from disclosing a driver’s personal information without permission by the State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Not that it will happen, however.... so many Deep Staters need to be prosecuted and after ah honest and thorough trial need conviction!

The trouble, I fear, is finding honest jurors.

Yea, I feel there are Democrats and Globalist RINOs who would allow the Deep Staters to skate.

Grrrrr.

I’m beginning to get the sense that this is not something that Schiff really had anything to do with, other than being the public face of it and taking any potential fall.

To me it seems like a sort of flailing attempt at a warning that Trump hasn’t completely shut them down, and that they’re in an abject panic over just what has been discovered vis-a-vis Ukraine.

Knowing how Trump played them during the election with the attempted spying, there’s really no telling what sort of BS they think they’ve monitored.
