As many as 20 people may be injured after White Island erupted on Monday afternoon.

The volcanic eruption began at around 2:15pm on Monday.

A group of people believed to be tourists were on the island at the time. St John has confirmed to Newstalk ZB that they have reports of up to 20 injured in the eruption.

Whakaari / White Island is an active andesite stratovolcano, situated 48 km (30 mi) from the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, in the Bay of Plenty. It is New Zealand’s most active cone volcano, and has been built up by continuous volcanic activity over the past 150,000 years.[1] The nearest mainland towns are Whakatane and Tauranga. White Island has been in a nearly continuous stage of releasing volcanic gas at least since it was sighted by James Cook in 1769.

There were 100 tourists from a Cruise ship on the island.They do have a safe place that you can go to.

It is amazing that after 5 Billion years since it’s birth, planet earth is still 90% molten Lava in it’s belly.

Seems a little ill-advised, of course, timing is everything. For example, I've got my visits to volcanic craters timed for the 22nd century. I'm erring on the side of caution.
