The pivotal black vote

Some polls in recent weeks have provided an encouraging picture for President Donald Trump of strengthening support among black voters.

I like these kinds of reports. But I wonder how much of reality they are really capturing.

The Wall Street Journal, for instance, reports on new polling from the Kaiser Family Foundation showing outsize support from blacks for "Medicare for All."

According to this report, 74% percent of blacks compared with 69% of Hispanics and 44% of whites support a single-payer health care plan.

Even when told that there would be a high likelihood that such a plan would mean eliminating private insurance and raising taxes, a large majority of blacks still support the idea.

This isn't exactly the kind of polling data I anticipate from a population that is supposedly discovering that socialism is not a good idea.

Additional recent polling from The Economist/YouGov on Dec. 1-3 gives more reasons to question that there are seismic changes taking place in black political attitudes.

The pollsters asked, "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"

Among all respondents, 46% said that they are better off now, and 32% said they were better off four years ago.

However, among blacks, only 30% said they are better off now, and 42% said they were better off four years ago.

Given the headlines about a robust economy and historically low unemployment rates, you have to wonder what black voters are thinking.

I’m thinking black votes for Trump will be thrown into shredders by local election officials at rates consistent with historical norms.

Better to have a good job so you can purchase the care you want/need.

Medicare for all means that you get what they want to give you.

Trump doesn’t need a high black vote, only high enough in the swing states to drive a stake into the evil, festering pustule that is the heart of the Democrat Party.

Blacks support high taxes and big government in larger percentages than whites because higher percentages of them do not pay taxes. That is the biggest argument for a flat tax that has a rate that does not alter for different income levels and for an end to Entitlements. It’s all free to those people and they do not see the future any better than most of everyone else.

Your first sentence is true, but a flat tax entails a sales tax, sometimes given the slightly different-in-meaning euphemism “value-added tax,” which hurts low-income people more than high-income people, so many black people would be very foolish to be in favor of a flat tax.

I honestly think Trump should put Larry Elder or Allan West as Vice President to solidify the black vote

pivotal black vote

Pivotal? Are you kidding me? When does it ever pivot?

LBJ once promised to “have the N*****s voting democrat for 200 years.”

His promise is now over 27.7% delivered. Nothing I have seen makes me think his promise won’t be completely delivered.

Star Parker is right on target. Many black people are still socialistic in their political thinking, even if they don’t call it that.

But there is a youth movement, and these young people are attracted by the adherence to the Constitution of the conservatives and Republicans, which appeals to their deep love of equality—and also by the enthusiastic reception they receive in Republican circles. They are not their mothers’ and fathers’ political types. They think for themselves.

The notion that blacks will vote Republican has always been a pipedream. Blacks are the most loyal members of the free schitt army.

You are right on the black vote. The key is good turn GOP out and the Hispanic vote. If Trump gets the same % as last election for blacks about 6% he will be doing ok.

IF Biden (or other old white guy) gets the nomination look for him to add a woman who is either Black or Hispanic. That’s because the democratic vote is all about Black/Hispanic block voting. Thats how AOC and Omar among others got elected. Hispanic population suged again last year and is now up to 60 million

the increasing demographic or ethnic block voting for Dems- it’s 2/3 of the Dem vote, that is the real story, and challenge for GOP. Without the block voting of African American’s (93% + for Dems+ and especially Hispanic Americans-approaching 70%,) CA would still be the state that elected Reagan governor and nationally the Dems would have a little over 100 seats and about 10-12 Senate seats. At Least Hispanics don’t vote 90% dems, thats our opening

Just look at the states won by Trump,he won 32 states but only 4 have a population of Hispanic voters over 13%. Clinton by contrast won 28 states and only 5 had a Hispanic population of under 13%.

In CA, the Hispanic Population is now about 40% (and yes fueled by illegal immigrants and higher birth rate )and African American 12%.

This demographic shift and resulting voting trend is what is going on in early stages in Nevada, Az, Fl and now Texas. Colorado is now over 20% Hispanic and now a dem state, Nevada over 29% and voting solidly blue. I believe this is why the dems are for illegal immigration-it gets them votes and power.

I think Trump at least addresses , so we cannot pretend we can win without Hispanics or fall for the “its just white liberals” myth or the entire country will be CA and we will lose the presidential race in 2020 but we can win!

A flat tax is NOT in any way a sales tax any more than any other income tax is a sales tax. Sales taxes at a national level are every bit as bad as the progressive income tax.

I didn’t say a flat tax WAS a sales tax. I said a flat tax ENTAILS a sales tax. It’s the only to make ends meet. Even conservative think tanks were estimating a federal sales tax of 22 percent would be needed to make up for the reduced income tax revenue.

In static economics it would seem that a flat tax must bring reduced income to the government. That is mistaken. A flat tax with no exemptions, credits, deductions, would increase business activity and give the poor a stake in the system which a sales tax would not. Couple that with elimination of tax on business and the economy would rise quickly.

You just said it yourself: A flat tax is bad for the economy.

I simply said it was unfair to those who spend a greater proportion of their income on necessities. Or that’s what I meant to say.

Anyway, argue with the big guys about what the rate would be. Give Cato Institute a call. Maybe they’ll bring their estimate down a few points.
