Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq on track for fresh closing records as investors shrug off Trump impeachment: What's Driving the Market?

Stocks were on track Thursday to set fresh closing records, unfazed by President Donald Trump’s impeachment and finding support in the interim U.S.-China trade deal and improvements in the global economic outlook.

What are stock indexes doing?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, rose 125 points, or 0.4%, to 28,364, while the S&P 500 index SPX gained 13 points, or 0.4%, at 3,204. The Nasdaq Composite index COMP added 51 points, a gain of 0.6%, at 8,879.

All three major benchmark stock indexes set new intraday highs Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, the Dow and S&P 500 snapped a five-day winning streak to end slightly lower. The Dow ended with a loss of 27.88 points, or 0.1%, at 28,239.28, while the S&P 500 gave up 1.38 points, or less than 0.1%, to end at 3,191.14. The Nasdaq Composite held onto a small gain to eke out its fifth-straight record close at 8,827.73, a gain of 4.38 points, or less than 0.1%.

What’s driving the market

While the vote to impeach Trump by the Democratic party controlled House dominated headlines, investors have largely brushed off the proceedings, analysts said. Expectations the Republican-controlled Senate will vote against removing Trump from office have insulated the market against any concerns.

“The market is suggesting right now that it’s meaningless,” said Kent Engelke, chief economic strategist at Capitol Securities Management, of Trump’s impeachment. “Right now, it's all about trade, economic activity and the yield curve at its steepest it’s been for all of 2019. That’s an indicator of greater economic activity in the interim.”

Meanwhile the market remains heartened by the truce in the U.S. - China trade war after last week’s agreement, while recent economic data has tentatively soothed worries over global economic growth.

Simple, it's a 'Stalin show trial in Freedonia' as performed by the Marx Brothers trying to indict a ham sandwich. Everyone thinks the whole idea is preposterous.

What's Driving the Market?

Heard today - RATS must talk down the booming economy. It's the only way that they can 'win'. Kinda sucks to be them.

Lower taxes, lower regulation, lower energy costs.

Well, since the ridiculous turn of events in the Schiff/Nad/Nan show it’s looking like PDJT is locking in that second term so the market is cruising right along.

Not really all that hard for common sense business leaders to understand and react to.

My idiot nephew has tried to tell me that this economy is the result of Bronco Bomma’s policies finally taking hold. I said, sure, if he had two more terms like FDR or even three or four more and a World War or two we could really be set.

I’m constantly trying to figure out how the lib mind works to believe what it does. I figure they are evil, ignorant, desperate to be given something or just stupid gullible. Have I named one characteristic of your nephew? You have already said idiot. Is he really just stupid?

Nope, not stupid. He scored a 93 on his ASVABs but he didn’t beat his Uncle Kickaha’s 96. I’m not sure where I went wrong with the boy. He got kicked out of the Marines because he liked the weed in Hawaii too much. That kind of warped him I think. He married some yoga chick and lived in Portland OR for 15 years. After that, I think the damage was permanent. He makes me sad.

Oh, my. The Hussein policy that pronounced, "Those jobs aren't coming back"? That would be one lively dinner setting. Good luck through the holiday....

Thanks, but I don’t expect him this year. The rest of us will have a good time, though. Ha!

Going back to your curiosity about how leftists think, let me try this theory on you.

It seems to me that of those who are infatuated with Marxism there are two basic types. The first believe that they will be allowed to do nothing and have their every want satisfied. They think this is “fair”. They don’t realize that they will be given very little which will only feed their envy, resentment and anger. Whatever self-worth and dignity they might have possessed will be destroyed and they will become worse than animals fed by a zookeeper.

The second type thinks they will be one of the masterminds, giving the orders and basking in the glory of finally bringing about the Utopia that has never been achieved because they weren’t the ones in charge. This type doesn’t realize that they are only useful idiots who will be lined up against the wall when their utility to the “revolution” ends.

But what about the ones who don’t have a clue what Marxism is? There are lots of those.

BTW, I agree with your two types of Marxists. I believe that Yuri Bezmenov would call either type useful idiots though.

After these there are the megalomaniacs who lead the pack of Marxists.

Sure, according to him it’s just medicine. One with no side effects and good for just about everything. I’ve been tempted to spit on his shirt and ask how it is on stains!

I used Marxism as a catch all for everything the Left has tried to call themselves. Liberal, Socialist, Progressive, Communist, Democratic Socialist, whatever they think will fool them next. The root of the problem is the schools. Bill Ayers did his most serious damage after he stopped building bombs.
