Japan on Friday approved a contentious plan to send its naval troops to the Middle East to ensure the safety of Japanese ships transporting oil to the energy-poor country that heavily depends on imports from the region.
The Cabinet’s decision reflects tensions that have escalated between Iran and the U.S. since President Donald Trump withdrew from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal.
”Taking into consideration the escalating tension in the Middle East, it is necessary to strengthen our information gathering effort,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide suga told a news conference. Citing Japan’s heavy dependence on oil imports from the region, Suga added that “it is extremely important to secure the safe navigation of Japan-affiliated ships.”

It think it’s great but i’m too lazy to read the whole article and find out what is meant by “information gathering”.
I’m sure there’s an arm of the military or govt that does that but it doesn’t come to mind right away when reading about sending naval troops.

Um, they're sending a destroyer and two P-3s for aerial reconnaissance of the shipping lanes to protect tankers delivering oil to Japan.
Why shouldn't they "be there"? - Japan has no oil of her own, so she needs to protect the mid-east oil they are buying.
How is that not rational?
Considering how Japan is willing to accept and adapt to their population decline, rather than repopulate their country with Third World types, as Europe will complete and we likely will also complete, if we elect Democrats again - it’s hard for me to beat up on them.

As I’m sure you know, Japan brought in something like 42 ‘refugees’ last year (I think), so it will be a while (several hundred years, by my estimation) before they even begin to act up.
...so you’re safe, your kids are safe, and your family can enjoy the food!
