Security guards were seen retreating inside the embassy earlier on Tuesday as protesters hurled bottles and smashed security cameras outside the buildings.
Flames rose from the compound as furious rioters pressed up against the bullet-proof windows within the complex, taunting the US soldiers within and spraying pro-Hezbollah graffiti over the glass.
Half a dozen US marine guards fired warning shots from the rooftops, followed by tear gas and stun grenades, at rioters who set blazes and smashed up barricades on the ground.
Hundreds of angry protesters, many in military fatigues, set up tents outside the embassy and set fire to trailers used by security guards along the embassy wall.
Twenty people have been reported injured in the carnage.
Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi pleaded with the mob against any aggression towards foreign embassies and representations in Baghdad, asking protesters outside the U.S. embassy to leave 'immediately.'

Bottom line: Islamic culture is not compatible with Western values, practices and institutions. The American entanglement in the Mideast is and has been a futile sacrifice of American blood and treasure. It has not only failed to enhance the security of the American people but it has created countless frenzied enemies. Islamic culture clings to it medieval roots and traditions. If it is to change, it will not be by force of arms. It will change by exposure to the internet and social media. Even uneducated people will come to the realization that there is a better way to live. There is no question that America must completely disengage and allow the locals to determine their own destiny.
Highly possible this is what’s going on - Trump gets goaded into a war and the rats will never stop screaming - even though it’s what they want anyway.
The biggest mistake the US made in the Middle East was to allow them to nationalize the oil fields.
Wouldn’t surprise me if this was concocted with help and/or advice from anti-Trumpers in congress and/or the intel community.
I would advise these thugs that American embassies are now getting protection. The days of them being left to their own devices in the face of attacks are over. Beware.
And Brennan works for Kissinger.
Trump defending soldiers in Iraq from Iranian aggression will most certainly not be the reason he doesn’t win re-election. Why should the soldiers etc who no one will support him to pull out of the country be sitting ducks?
Of course that was their intention.
They know what greatness he has to offer America. The last thing they want is for him to succeed.
Trump's success means their failure, and they will destroy America and scorch the earth to prevent Trump from succeeding.
