Now Is the Time to Stay in Iraq, Not Leave; Pulling out troops in Iraq only makes things worse.

With the death of General Soleimani and Iran's subsequent "saving face" retaliation, many pundits and commentators have expressed fear of an escalation of violence between the U.S. and Iran, something that could even mount into a third world war.

Considering that those pushing this narrative also happen to push the narrative that Trump is a fascist dictator, Obama's foreign policy was beyond reproach, and the current impeachment is completely legitimate, it's safe to assume that these critics are mistaken. Trump is unlikely to start a war with Iran; he has no reason to do so, nor does anyone want this of him.

The real thing to fear is the opposite scenario: Trump calls it a day after killing Soleimani and pulls troops out of Iraq and Syria. Many prominent conservatives have argued elsewhere that Americans should take this opportunity to the leave the region altogether. They argue that continued American involvement could well lead to an escalation of violence, but also that it has failed in its mission to promote peace and progress in the region. Furthermore, they point out how the U.S. presence has provided a cover and scapegoat for theocratic regimes trying to stay in power.

Therefore, they conclude that if the Americans left now, Iraq, Iran, and neighboring countries would finally deal with their own problems, have less reason for aggression toward one another, and have some kind of stability. And if things destabilize even more, the U.S. could at least not take blame anymore.

Even if some of the people making this case credit themselves as "realists," there is nothing realistic about this prediction. Rather, history strongly suggests that leaving the region altogether in response to Iranian threats and Iraqi protests would embolden bad actors; leave a power vacuum; and, yes, escalate violence in the region.

He’s gotta persuade the Iraqis, not us

Either ask us to stay and treat us as allies, or ask us to go
Then we should go because if we don’t then what are we?

RE: [shrug] And why would I care about that?

Obama did that and ISIS took over a huge swath of Iraq resulting in a refugee crisis that swamped Europe.

First, the article appears to be one big straw man, espousing arguments I have not seen elsewhere. The argument for leaving Iraq is based on national self-interest, and does not rely on the Muslim nations breaking out in unbridled cooperation to solve their problems.

Second, the argument presented emphasizes how much worse it will be for the people in the middle east, and does not address the national self-interest portion of the problem. The US has proven time and again that being in the middle east drains blood and treasure, killing our soldiers (and other Americans) and costing enormous sums of money which enrich the anti-american leaders of the countries we are there to help.

I do not know what the answer is, but I am certain it is not doing what is considered best for those who consciously make themselves our enemies while killing our soldiers and hemorrhaging money to build the enemy’s rage against us.

Iraq is asking us to leave. We should do so in a planned and orderly fashion. I think we only have about 2000 troops
In Syria fighting ISIS. We can draw those troops down incrementally.

Rules of Engagement with Muslims:

1) if non-Muslims are present, Muslims of the Shia and Sunni sects will combine to enslave (physically and economically), convert, and annihilate the infidels.

2) if no infidels are present, Shia will turn against Sunni sects until one or the other is annihilated.

The only question is, are YOU an infidel?

“[shrug] And why would I care about that?”

For the same reason ISIS rose and grew - if Iran takes over Iraq, it will end up taking a war to slow them down.

Single-minded, blindered, principles don’t always end up with the best results in the current reality - the Left follows it’s own principles and look what they manage to ruin...to follow our own principles as single-mindedly would be turning much power and hegemony over to the Dems and other terrorists.

Trump has ONE terrorist leader killed and the critics leap to “World War 3”?. How many did Obama off with predator drones? Just don’t get all this Pollyanna response to a single kill of a single terrorist?
