Had two associates coming on the local post late one Sunday evening.
Their pickup was picked for a random search. When asked if there was any weapons in the car the driver replied “There’s a 60mm mortar behind the seat.”
High excitement until the civilian security got there. We were working with the post museum on a display and had made prior coordination with the post security element.

How times have changed...in the 1970’s I used to purchase a case of Hercules 65% dynamite at a local hardware store. I had to fill out a form, I think it was a federal form, probably like a firearm purchase permit??? Can’t remember, but the hardware guy would either have us follow him to the magazine, or would bring the case in later in the afternoon. Could buy det cord and blasting caps too.
A buddy and I had a small dredge and were mining on rivers in Calif. I spent 5-years as an underground miner and was very familiar with handling explosives.
Now people get upset if someone discovers a mortar round or three in a vehicle.
And they crossed the yellow line when leaving the base.

Years ago, 1980s or 90s, a guy left his car window open on a street, and during his absence, somebody had tossed in a [unfused] block of semtex, the plastic explosive choice of terrorists at the time.
Maybe somebody did that to the car of the three gentlemen.

Back in 68 I was in ITR at Camp Pendleton, a dumbass in our platoon picked up a dud M-79 round off our live fire range.
Blew off his right arm, half his head and a huge portion of his upper torso.
Just lucky for the rest of us we were keeping a 10 meter interval, first time I ever saw a person blown up.
They could have found it and were bringing it back to who it belonged to. We used to find live ordinance all the time when I was a kid. Lived in the Mojave where Patton trained in WWII and they came out again and trained in the 60s with “Desert Strike”.
Finding ordinance both inert and live was a common thing. One old guy had been using an antitank mine as a door stopper for years before someone told him what it was. They took it to the marine base and turned it in, Turned out to be live.
Idiot reporter alert. Doesn’t even say if they were going in or coming out of the base.
