When Iran Took Americans Hostage, Bernie Backed Iran’s Defenders
Daily Beast ^ | January 17, 2020 | Ronald Radesh

Go back over 40 years, to the start of Iran’s long conflict with the United States. On April 1, 1979, the theocratic Islamic Republic of Iran was proclaimed. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who had returned to Iran from exile to assume command of the revolt, became Supreme Leader in December of that year. His rise was accelerated by the seizure on Nov. 4 of 52 American diplomats and citizens, and citizens of other countries, at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. The hostage crisis became the means by which the Ayatollah crushed political opponents in Iran. Dealing with the hostage taking became the overwhelming political crisis for President Jimmy Carter. It lasted 444 days.

Virtually all Americans—Democrats, Republicans and independents—united in support of the hostages and the international call for their freedom. One prominent political figure on the 2020 stage, then almost completely unknown, stood apart by joining a Marxist-Leninist party that not only pledged support for the Iranian theocracy, but also justified the hostage taking by insisting the hostages were all likely CIA agents. Who was that person? It was Bernie Sanders.

Sanders would like the public to believe, as an AP story put it, that “democratic socialism [is] the economic philosophy that has guided his political career.” But that has not always been the case. In 1977, he left the tiny left-wing Liberty Union Party of Vermont that he’d co-founded, and in 1980 instead aligned himself with the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), the self-proclaimed Trotskyist revolutionary party, became its presidential elector in Vermont, and campaigned for its candidates and platform that defended the Iranian hostage seizure.

Oh yeah, Bolshevik Bernie is screwed if he gets his Christmas wish and wins the nomination. He’s got a long history of this kind of crap that will be revealed, way worse than Buttcrack Hussein even. How radical do you have to be for the Vermont DemonRat party to not want you, so you have to spend 20 years as an independent? That’s Bolshevik Bernie.

I would think pointing this out would make it more likely for him to get the nomination.

I didn't think Bernie could get any creepier looking. The freaky thing is that his increase in creepiness travels backward in time.

Nice find Ron. Sanders was all over the place back in the late 70’s/early 80’s, but his strategy to gain power in Vermont politics originated with Dave Dellinger and the “commune movement”. This movement focused on Vermont wherein leftists of all stripes would move there, and because many cities and towns had small voter turnouts, the Marxists would run major campaigns to gain seats (and often control) of small city/town councils all over the state.

They were very successful. Somewhere back about 1973 or 1976 the NY Times ran a full page column length article on this phenomenon. Worth trying to find and mention in a followup to this article.

As luck would have it, right next to my desk is a copy of “North Star Review”, Number 2, Fall 1988, with a cover story entitled “The Rainbow Connection”, including “Rainbows in Vermont”

Its index page summary said the following:”Bernie Sanders and the Rainbow in Vermont” - “The electoral landscape of Vermont has changed radically in recent years as the Democratic party has challenged the state’s traditional Republicanism, only to be challenged itself by an emerging Rainbow Coalition. Ellen David-Friedman (SHE’S STILL AROUND), former chair of the Vermont rainbow Coalition, describes this trajectory from the victory of independent socialist Mayor Bernie Sanders and the Progressive Coalition of Burlington to the tensions between the Rainbow and the Democrats and Jesse Jackson’s success in the 1988 primaries. She concludes with an analysis of the prospects for Bernie Sander’s fall campaign as a socialist for Vermont’s congressional seat.”

The Communist Party was using the same strategy in California, with Tom Hayden playing a key role as front man. Meanwhile Michael Harrington was organizing the Democratic Socialists of America, which supported Bernie Sanders in Vermont and Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition nationally. Sanders also worked with the Liberty Union Party and its national umbrella the People's Party, which had run Benjamin Spock for president and was an offshoot of Bob Avakian's Maoist Peace and Freedom Party via Dick Gregory and Mark Lane's Freedom and Peace Party (Marxists are very creative with names, huh?).
