Global warming was blamed for evaporating the Great Lakes, now blamed for high water levels in Chicago's 'climate emergency'

“What we are seeing in global warming is the evaporation of our Great Lakes.” That was Illinois Senator Dick Durbin in 2013 when Lake Michigan was at a record low. You can find plenty of claims to the same effect from the time. Nobel Prize winner Al Gore chimed in around then, too, saying climate change was driving Great Lakes levels down by causing evaporation.

But that was then and this is now.

What’s causing today’s record high levels? Climate change, naturally.

So now, citing “catastrophic lakefront erosion” from high water, Chicago just declared a climate emergency. It’s radical, and is reproduced in full below.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Durbin want the federal government to help Chicago pay for damage to its shoreline. Lightfoot’s accompanying statement is reproduced below. You’ll be relieved to see that she’s putting “equity” at the center.

The great lakes form a large basin that holds the run off from a huge area of North America. Lake levels fluctuate, sometimes a lot, and mankind's activities can influence the levels very little if at all.

The political leadership in Chicago is obviously insane if they believe this nonsense.

I blame global warming for my toilet being clogged last week.

And the dent on the back left side of my car.

And the reason I’m not a multi-millionaire.

And the extra weight, that’s definitely global warming

Global warming!!!!!!

Its what ever the idiots want to tell their idiots to believe. We have congress people who are inherently stupid and because of the color of their skin and gender will arrogantly make ridiculous statements you dare not question them on.

Going to have to disagree here, mankind can have a lot of influence in the lake levels as we have built locks, power plants, and alternatives in the path of natural waterways. By blocking waters from leaving we are influencing water levels.

Of course that has nothing to do with climate change. My understanding is that around 2013 the GVT started trying to raise water levels and it looks like they succeeded. But as usual they screwed it up.

You are correct about man’s ability to influence. See: The Aral sea.

That said, the last few years in Michigan have been wet, after a bit of a dry spell so a lot of bodies of water are higher than they have been for some time. Whether or not the Government tried to intervene, I don’t know but Nature sure did. Presumably to punish those who wanted to be very close to the water...

Every single body of water, from the smallest streams to the largest oceans, has fluctuated from the beginning of time. The problem with the liberals is their history started yesterday. These people can’t grasp past history, but they have this uncanny ability to see far far into the future. 🙄

More water in the Great Lakes allows for more tonnage of iron ore, stone and coal to be moved...

Once they find out how the lakes formed, they wont recover!

We here on the east side of L. Michigan have had some vacation homes that have fallen into the lake due to erosion, but nothing that is an “emergency” by any means.

If people are that paranoid, then just sell more of the water to Arizona and California.

Let's just blame global warming for everything dealing with the Great Lakes including their exitence.

the lake levels operate in a cycle. It goes from low to high to normal about every 7 years. We are in year 4 of the cycle. Levels will begin to drop for the next 3 years until they get to about normal. Then the cycle will repeat itself.

It’s the Canadian’s... seriously. Keeping Superior high, while not letting Niagara open.

The draught started in 2007 and baked the land feeding the Great Lakes Basin for 7 years or more. Inland lakes that are fed by the aquafers, are still low. Also, is Niagara Falls running wide open, or are they still diverting half the water around it? For preservation of the Falls.
