MUNICH (AP) — A senior U.S. official said Friday the United States and the Taliban have reached a truce agreement that will take effect “very soon” and could lead to withdrawals of American troops from Afghanistan.
The official said the agreement for a seven-day “reduction in violence” to be followed by the start of all-Afghan peace talks within 10 days is “very specific” and covers the entire country, including Afghan government forces. There were indications a formal announcement could come as early as the weekend.
The official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the Taliban had committed to a halt in roadside and suicide bombings as well as rocket attacks. The official said the U.S. would monitor the truce and determine if there were any violations.
Should the Taliban comply, the “reduction in violence” agreement would be followed by the signing of an agreement that would initiate peace negotiations that include all Afghan sides.
A Taliban official familiar with the deal said the second agreement would be signed on Feb. 29 and that the inter-Afghan dialogue would begin on Mar. 10. The officials said Germany and Norway have offered to host the talks but there has been no decision on the venue.
That Taliban official added that the withdrawal of foreign troops would start gradually and would be phased over 18 months.

Let’s face it; the only thing that can cure Afghanistan of continuing down the same path is to evacuate every sane person out of the country, leave the Taliban in place, and then carpet bomb the entire country from one end to the other, eliminating every enemy. Turn it into a parking lot then start over.

Agreed. It’s their country. If they want to run around and play Taliban vs Muslim extremist vs tribal war lord we need to GTFO.
Finally, a thoughtful comment. Evidently there are plenty of war mongers here who buy into the non sequitur “kill them over there or else we’ll have to kill them over here” mentality, courtesy the genius Schrub.
The Republic of Vietnam was far more stable than Afghanistan.
If they could get a government in Kabul like Nguyen Van Thieu, the Pentagon would be doing cartwheels.
I frankly don’t care if they want to live under Salafi Islam, trillions of dollars spent and thousands of lives lost aren’t worth preventing it.
I used to subscribe to the “fight them there or fight them here” mindset. Kinda funny since I was never eligible to serve in the first place, but thankful due to hindsight.
That thought process is extremely toxic and makes “serving” seem like a conveyor belt of anxious and proud Americans come back maimed and killed.
Why are we still there? Why did we start a proper war in Iraq or Afghanistan? Why did we go to Iraq the first time? Why were we in Mogadishu? Korea, Vietnam? Panama?
We had every legitimate reason to go to war against Iran after they took our embassy, but neither Carter nor the house wanted to. Why? Why ignore a legitimate reason such as that, to instead play policeman all over the rest of the world, getting our good people ruined in the process?
I think Trump never received adequate answers about why we were still there 18 years later.
An agreement with the Taliban is as useful as an agreement with China. This will end like Viet Nam.

The rump Taliban state could then be warned that exportation of terrorism would result in being bombed back into the stone age but their medieval kleptocracy would be left alone.
Nobody has any authority to do that except for Afghanistan.
Tell that to the people who created Iraq, Kuwait, Palestine, Transjordan, Syria and other countries from the Ottoman Empire, post World War I, mostly dysfunctional entities with which we are still dealing with today.
Did the US create any of those?
Why did we go to Korea at all?
