Chicago records coldest Valentine’s Day temp in nearly half a century

Chicago residents woke up Friday to subzero temperatures on Valentine’s Day that were the coldest in 47 years.

The city recorded minus 2 degrees shortly before sunrise at O’Hare International Airport, according to the National Weather Service.

That’s one degree cooler than the city experienced in 1943 — and was also the coldest day so far this season.

But it’s still well above the coldest recorded Valentine’s Day on record in 1905, when the city saw temperatures of minus 11.

It’s Valentine’s Day in cold Chicago. Think I’ll sing “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with Chicago cold.

Maybe the cold will keep the weekend killings down to a moderate rate or will the headlines next Monday read, “Cold City, Hot Lead continues”? Or when it snows, a headline that says “Piled High and Deep, but it Ain’t the Snow We’re Talking About”.

It has been cold here in beautiful mid-Michigan. Not too bad when the wind isn’t blowing. But it’s mid-February. No big deal.

And from Boston:

With temperatures in the single digits and wind chills below zero, the long weekend starts out very cold.
By Mike Carraggi, Patch Staff
Feb 14, 2020 11:33 am ET | Updated Feb 14, 2020 11:43 am ET

The bitter cold of winter is making a resurgence this weekend, with wind chills plummeting below zero and temperatures remaining below freezing util Sunday.

The freeze has already started across Massachusetts, where afternoon highs are in the low-to-mid 20s. It’s a stark difference from what has been a mild winter — including the warmest January on record.

The temperature Friday night is expected to drop well into the single digits. That, along with a steady wind, will make it feel something like negative four degrees overnight and into Saturday morning.

Things begin to warm up Sunday afternoon, with highs of around 40 to round out the long weekend.

The threat of another winter storm is lurking on the other side Presidents’ Day.

Boston-area forecast via NWS

Today - Sunny, with a high near 23. Northwest wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

Tonight - Clear, with a low around 2. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph.

Saturday - Sunny, with a high near 28. Wind chill values as low as -3. Light and variable wind becoming southwest 5 to 8 mph in the morning.

Saturday Night - Increasing clouds, with a low around 22. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph.

Sunday - Partly sunny, with a high near 41. Southwest wind around 6 mph.

Sunday Night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 27. Light southwest wind.

Washington’s Birthday - Sunny, with a high near 39. West wind around 6 mph.

Monday Night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 24. Light and variable wind.

Tuesday - A chance of snow before 10am, then a chance of rain and snow between 10am and 11am, then rain likely after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Tuesday Night - A chance of rain before 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. Southwest wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Wednesday - Partly sunny, with a high near 39. West wind 7 to 10 mph.

Wednesday Night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 18. Northwest wind 7 to 9 mph.

Thursday - Sunny, with a high near 29. Northwest wind around 8 mph.

It’s a one-day cold wave in northern Illinois. Saturday the temp is going to be in 30s. Last year we had about 10 days in a row of very cold weather, so this year is making up for it.

When my worst winter story so far this year is that the snowblower acts up because the gas in the refill container is getting old, that’s a good winter.

it was cold in Chicago on St Valentines Day 1929...15 degrees. At 10:30 a.m., at 2122 North Clark street..in a garage...things heated up quick...7 Moran gangsters were trapped and executed by Capone gangsters dressed as policeman. Easily the most spectacular gangland killing ever. 91 years later and never solved....

Were there any Trump supporters with MAGA hats, looking for Jussie Smollett?

My gas bill has been less than half of what it normally is for winter. This is in SE Wisconsin. So far, it’s been a mild winter and not a lot of snow. I’m not complaining.

Here in north Jersey we had colder temps in November/December but milder ones now; the global warming alarmists have complained about the disastrous effects of the “snow drought” on our reservoirs in the upcoming spring.

Now, we haven’t been lacking precipitation - there has been plenty of rain (when clouds trap heat, driving temperatures up), and that rain is keeping the reservoirs filled. When the skies are clear it is cold (just no snow, because no clouds). They just needed to fabricate a crisis out of it with scary words...

If we have record cold, it must be global warming.

Here in chicago they’re complaining that Lake Michigan is too high and because of global warming this is the new normal. 8 years ago, Lake Michigan was too low and this was the new normal because of global warming. It is of course just a natural cycle, it’s high this year because of the extreme col last year, and when parts of the lake freeze evaporation is hindered. They take any deviation from the”average as global warming, when the lake is never average, it goes higher and lower
