TEHRAN – Iran's health ministry raised Sunday the death toll from the new virus to 8 people in the Middle Eastern country, amid concerns that clusters there, as well as in Italy and South Korea, could signal a serious new stage in its global spread.

Health ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour told state TV that there were now 43 confirmed cases of the illness in Iran.

The outbreak in Iran has centered on the holy city of Qom, where officials say travellers from China brought the new coronavirus.

Iran reported its first case of the virus last Wednesday.

Jahanpour added that the 15 newly confirmed cases included 7 in Qom, four in the capital, Tehran, two in the northern Gilan province, one in the central Markazi province, and one from town of Tonekabon in the northern Mazandaran province, who died of the illness.

Reactions of governments hiding the truth about the seriousness of this disease have given me all the information I needed. This virus is really bad and China specifically has not come out and directly said so. The illness is far worse in the way it shows symptoms (or doesn't) and infects people.

It is far worse when one is sick with it than they are telling people. And, the mortality rate is worse and HEALTHY people who should be able to weather it are DYING. The coverup is so the very rich can move their assets to safety as much as possible before panic sets in and all hell breaks loose. The record lows on Treasury bond yields (very few understand what that means) and the sharp uptick in the price of gold tell me all I need to know about that. Batten down the hatches. It's going to be a rough ride.

That timeline better matches other stories coming out of Iran, where people coming out of Iran were showing up sick in other countries. Considering the population of Iran (82M), there needs to be a widespread bug for someone to visit that country for a week, and bring the virus home with them.

Be nice if I could read. I projected the article on Iran, when it was about China...but I still stand by my analysis of Iran’s situation - it had to be going around there for quite a while, and be very widespread, for visitors to be getting sick there.

It seems to me that the main reason to visit "the holy city of Qom" is pilgrimmage. The part of China with lots of Muslims is Xinjiang. And, kts also the westermonst province, the closest to Iran, with just a few "'Stans" in between. I wonder if that's the connection, rather than random tourism, or business, or government/military visits.
