Philippines' Duterte says country can fight insurgents, Muslim extremists without US military

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday said Filipino forces can fight insurgents and Muslim extremists without American military help, in a defense of his recent decision to terminate a U.S. security pact.

Duterte also said in a speech that he would stick to a decision made early in his presidency, when he was enraged by then-President Barack Obama’s criticism of his deadly anti-drug crackdown, that he will not travel to the United States.

The brash Philippine leader has often criticized U.S. security policies while praising China and Russia since taking office in mid-2016 for a six-year term.

U.S. President Donald Trump invited Duterte to join a meeting he will host for leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Las Vegas next month. Duterte has better relations with Trump than with Obama, but his remarks Wednesday support an earlier statement by his spokesman that he would not attend the Las Vegas meeting. Remains of World War II American ship found at bottom of Philippine Sea

The wreck of a U.S. World War II destroyer has been found. A research team discovered the sunken ship over 20-thousand feet below the surface of the Philippine Sea. Experts believe it is the USS Johnston , which sank after a battle with Japanese military forces.

“Do we need America to survive as a nation?" Duterte asked. "Do we need ... the might and power of the military of the United States to fight our rebellion here and the terrorists down south and control drugs?”

“The military and police said, `Sir, we can do it,’” he said.

“If we can’t do it, we have no business being a republic,” Duterte said. “You might as well choose. We can be a territory of the Americans or we can be a province of China.”

He’s right about being able to fight insurgents without foreign help. Scorched earth + mass killings have pretty much a 100% record of success against insurgencies where the insurgents are a small minority. Kill off their civilian support base, and the insurgents die with them.

Problem is how they ward off China. But maybe that’s not a problem from Duterte’s perspective. Maybe he’s bent on literally making the Philippines a Chinese province.

1. They have a weak military which the insurgents massacre, unless we help the government forces.

2. He loves communist China.

3 Duterte is popular but he’s turned into a real disaster.

Obviously America is too far to make Philippines our province these days. China is another matter, and Duterte is selling out to China.

I’ll bet anything CHINA pours in the drugs and terrorist weapons to destabilize the Philippines. Duterte either is in on it, or doesn’t care.

The regime is plenty strong for scorched earth tactics. They have the literal ability to exterminate everyone in the areas where the rebels operate. This kind of thing is pretty standard operating procedure in that region, because counter-insurgencies are expensive, whereas extermination is a one-time expense.

And it’s not something new. It’s how insurgencies have been quashed on the cheap pretty much since anyone started keeping records, and probably before then. Alexander did kill every man in Persepolis, the Persian capital.

Decades before the NSDAP won power, the Kaiser did something similar in what is now Namibia:

You’re talking generalized nonsense. The Philippines has never shown the ability to successfully go “scorched earth” on the insurgents.

Muslims have control of Southern islands and the government has no ability to wipe them out. They usually call on us for help but even so they make marginal progress.

The insugencies are also weak.
Been there, we chased them around a bit, they limited us to three rounds per troop, we weren’t supposed to engage.

So yeah, they could have wiped them out back in the seventies and eighties.

As for China, why the FV@{ haven’t we reinstalled military facilities in the Pacific?

Shouldn’t Midway and all those little islands be occupied again? And should not the United States get it’s house in order on that matter before popping off about the Philippines?

There are times when hypocrisy hinders your ability to negotiate.

Hurray!! Go to it and get it done!
It's about time these so called allies and friends
of the USA dealt with their own problems and paid their
own bills without pleading to the USA for help and money.

[The Philippines has never shown the ability to successfully go “scorched earth” on the insurgents.]

Post-independence, the Philippines has never attempted scorched earth on the insurgents. Then again, the Philippines had never, until Duterte, simply killed people in the streets, including serving elected officials, and left their bodies lying there.

This is not rocket science. Even the most incompetent regimes can exterminate entire regions. It’s basically a large-scale hunt, where every living human is killed. Alexander was able to do this with fairly primitive weaponry. The Indonesians did it mostly with edged weapons not too dissimilar from what the Greeks used. The Hutus killed 800,000 using similar methods.
