US-Taliban deal could see US pullout in 14 months

[The agreement was signed this morning a little after 0800 eastern]

Since 2011, Qatar has hosted Taliban leaders who have moved there to discuss peace in Afghanistan. It has been a chequered process. A Taliban office was opened in 2013, and closed the same year amid rows over flags. Other attempts at talks stalled.

In December 2018, the militants announced they would meet US officials to try to find a "roadmap to peace". But the hard-line Islamist group continued to refuse to hold official talks with the Afghan government, whom they dismissed as American "puppets".

What a waste, as Trump says we never should have been involved there. We never learned a lesson from the Russians.

Why does it take longer to get out of a mess than it is to get into one?

Forget it. It ain’t gonna happen. To them this is a religious war. It isn’t about anything but their efforts to spread their sect disguised as a religion throughout the world. They kill arbitrarily punishing a world that doesn’t fit their blueprint and are willing to die to do it to be rewarded in their heaven with slaves and sex. They will not quit without their “God’s” fulfillment and are wishing to create a pagan world to get it. And again, they don’t care who they harm unless it is in the interest of their pursuit of world dominance and lying, cheating, and stealing is not only acceptable, but encouraged in their efforts.

Anyone who trusts them, would easily, and most likely, be sold out and snuffed if they need to. Anything is a means to their way and they’ve already proven their deceitfulness many times over. There is no end to it until the religion is wiped off the face of the earth. No other way for safety. And if people have to die to get that done, I’m sorry but suffering of others is the result of not doing it.

It’s nazism on steroids. And all it can get is worse. And all this is defined within their Bible, the Koran, the book they use to accomplish it. So this is what they say, not the rest of the world. Abolish it.

Sign the piece of paper and then continuously bomb them into oblivion, while we get our men and women out.

Then leave a stinking crater in that shithole.

Should have never set foot in that God forsaken land.

No one has ever tamed Afghanistan and no one will.

Far too many people believed Bush when he said Islam is a religion of peace.

Hard to believe the MIC will allow this to happen, they must be ginning up another conflict somewhere to replace this one.

Syria, Iran, Libya...take your pick.

I’m going to respectfully disagree. I think it goes deeper. Afghans are Muslims, but they aren’t all about spreading Islam. They’re all about not being pushed around by outsiders. We are by no means the first Great Power to be forced to leave Afghanistan. Ask the Soviets or the British.

In my opinion we should have never invaded with the idea of sticking around. Go in, kill whoever needed to be killed and then get out. Invading Afghanistan never ends well for the invader. If we are lucky, they will let us withdraw peacefully. Look up how the 1st Anglo Afghan war ended.

Like Viet Nam it is not like we could not win the war, our political masters did not have the will to do what is required to win.

So, like Viet Nam, sign a worthless “peace treaty”, pick up our toys and come home.

Have you a quote of Trump saying we should never have been in Afghanistan?

I cannot find one.

Define a “win” in Afghanistan.

When they are no longer trying to kill Americans and we are no longer trying to kill them!

But that is not what you were after. You wanted me to state the goals we were trying to achieve by going into Afghanistan which I can not do since I don’t think we had any long term goals.

So don’t ask me to do what the President and military chiefs should have done before sending the first American in to die!

Now if you want to know how we could have “won” I would point you to WWII where we fought on two separate fronts and brought the world to a end after just four years (of our involvement).

Don’t want total war, then don’t go to war at all.

You're talking about the history of failure. With each one within the effort to stop the Islamic nightmare, we illustrate their successes and our failure. "Go in, kill whoever needed to be killed and then get out." We still haven't accomplished that goal and never will. Islam is the official state religion of Afghanistan, with approximately 99.7% of the Afghan population being Muslim. And with the attitude and belief of the religion, you have to destroy the whole snake, not just cut off the head. Plus the Ismaili follow their leaders uncritically. Told to kill. is just another action to be done. So how many do you kill and who? The population of Afghanistan in 2020 was 38.93 million. That means you will have to take out 38.81 million people to guarantee another head not growing on the snake just from that population alone and not someone like Bin Laden coming in like he's done before. He may be dead, but his template remains. And the rest of the world has become someone's cup of چای (tea). And the one thing the US has never learned from this whole thing is they can't be negotiated with, they lie like a rug, and they will kill you while you are at the tables trying to be stupid. And they are a lot more jubilant in doing so than everyone else is in doing it for them. rwood

My point was that Afghans’ hostility to uninvited outsiders is above and beyond Islam’s hostility towards non believers. I honestly believe, based on my somewhat limited knowledge of the history of the place, that they would be just as vicious and treacherous to Pakistani or Iranian invaders as Christian or officially atheist ones. They are dominated by a most fundamental form of Islam, true, firmly rooted in the 7th century; they seem to like it there.

Afghans did not attack us on 9/11 although the masterminds were headquartered there. I’ve heard of no Afghan attacks on Russia after they pulled out and I don’t imagine they will be interested in coming here to bother us.
