Coronavirus poses new challenge to Trump's re-election bid

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump faced one of the gravest threats of his political career as the coronavirus pandemic spread, leaving fellow Republicans to worry that the White House’s response and the hit to the economy would harm his re-election prospects.

U.S. stock market indexes that Trump has touted throughout his term as evidence of his success plunged into bear market territory on Thursday - a day after he tried to calm Americans’ fears with an Oval Office address that promised economic stimulus and a 30-day travel ban for Europeans.

Some Republicans worried that the measures were too little, too late for an administration that for several weeks minimized the risk of the COVID-19 respiratory disease caused by the virus that has killed at least 39 Americans.

“The president’s early downplaying and politicizing of the virus hurt his credibility and will make people question the administration’s readiness from now until the day this passes,” said Mike DuHaime, a Republican strategist who ran Chris Christie’s gubernatorial campaigns in New Jersey.

“The president’s greatest strength has been the economy. If the stock markets continue to tank, and real people begin to hurt financially, it will hurt the president politically.”

Trump emerged triumphant last month after his Senate acquittal in a Democratic-led impeachment drive, ready to ride high on a strong economy as a crowded field of Democratic candidates bickered over who was best to take him on in November’s general election.

The narrative quickly changed. Moderate Democrats in the past two weeks have consolidated their support behind former Vice President Joe Biden over liberal Senator Bernie Sanders. They are betting that Biden can draw support from across the party, as well as from suburban moderates and disaffected Republicans.

Swine Flu - 2009 (Wiki):

It is estimated that in the 2009 flu pandemic 11–21% of the then global population (of about 6.8 billion), or around 700 million to 1.4 billion people, contracted the illness — more in absolute terms than the Spanish flu pandemic. However, with about 150,000–575,000 fatalities, it had a much lower case fatality rate. In August 2010, the World Health Organization declared the swine flu pandemic officially over.

Subsequent cases of swine flu were reported in India in 2015, with over 31,156 positive test cases and 1,841 deaths up to March 2015.

1. This issue will be gone before November
2. Swing voters aren’t going to blame him for a worldwide virus that started in China
2. Have you seen his opponent?

This is an accurate take on the situation. If things really go south, the man at the top very often takes the fall. It’s pretty much SOP in business to axe the top guy and replace him. Carter didn’t handle Iran very well and he got sacked, even though he had public support in the early days of the Iran crisis.

2. Swing voters aren’t going to blame him for a worldwide virus that started in China

But they will blame him for the U.S. response to it.

2. Have you seen his opponent?

I'm sure Hillary supporters were saying that about Trump in 2016.

Funny how people forget that I wrote this back on 2-23-2020:

And again... Reactions of governments hiding the truth about the seriousness of this disease have given me all the information I needed. This virus is really bad and China specifically has not come out and directly said so. The illness is far worse in the way it shows symptoms (or doesn't) and infects people.

It is far worse when one is sick with it than they are telling people. And, the mortality rate is worse and HEALTHY people who should be able to weather it are DYING. The coverup is so the very rich can move their assets to safety as much as possible before panic sets in and all hell breaks loose. The record lows on Treasury bond yields (very few understand what that means) and the sharp uptick in the price of gold tell me all I need to know about that. Batten down the hatches. It's going to be a rough ride.

People paniced and oversold. The stock market will start going back up. If the Democrats play politics with the Trump stimulus and/or start nitpicking Trump’s actions, it will casted them as obstructing the nation’s response and playing politics in a time of crisis while Trump is trying to lead us out of this. The Dems have boxed themselves in and last three years will support this view. Trump will come out of this looking like the leader he is.

Once again the media think this will be the end of Trump. I think they have this backwards.

The intentional incitement of fear, panic, hysteria and economic destruction that the Marxist media are inflicting on the American public is criminal and should be prosecuted as “Seditious Conspiracy” via the RICO statute. Under the false pretense of “public awareness” they’re actively engaged in a political proxy war on behalf of their Democrat Stalinist masters to take down President Trump in November. In fact, they couldn’t care less about the lives of ordinary Americans who live outside of their elitist ideological cocoon. They are America’s Public Enemy #1, -— Remember In November!

Trump will be fine. Singapore and Vietnam got a handle on their outbreaks early by doing China travel bans. Now Trump is following in their footsteps by doing a Europe travel ban.

FakeNewsMSM is running with this line, and will continue to do so. ignore them.

also, Reuters is gloBULL warming central. anything with Steve Holland among the authors is dubious. note the following:

18 May 2016: Reuters: Exclusive: Skeptical Trump says would renegotiate global climate deal
Reporting by Emily Flitter and Steve Holland; Additional reporting by Valerie Volcovici; Writing by Richard Valdmanis; Editing by Ross Colvin and Tiffany Wu

Former French foreign minister Laurent Fabius, who helped broker the deal, said this month that the U.S. election was critical to its future. “If a climate change denier was to be elected, it would threaten dramatically global action against climate disruption,” he said...
Trump has said that he believes global warming is a concept that was invented by China to hurt the competitiveness of U.S. business. One of his energy policy advisers is a climate change skeptic, U.S. Congressman Kevin Cramer of North Dakota.
Hillary Clinton, the leading Democratic contender for the White House, has advocated shifting the country to 50 percent clean energy by 2030...
Trump’s comment drew fire from environmental advocates.
“This is another example of Trump’s dangerous lack of judgment and the very real impacts it could have for all of us,” said Gene Karpinski, president of the U.S.-based environmental group League of Conservation Voters.
“Trump’s denunciation of the Paris climate accord is not only short sighted, but would be terribly costly for America and our ability to lead the world. We cannot go backwards on this important step towards a clean energy economy that benefits all our families,” billionaire environmental financier Tom Steyer said in a statement.

The Paris agreement has an article built into it meant to protect countries in the accord in the event that a new government comes in and wants to dismantle it. The clause says any nation wanting to withdraw will first have to wait four years...

There are absolutely no other political leaders I trust more to lead us through this situation than President Trump. Leftwards are too stupid to know how fortunate they are.
