As Mass. Gov. Charlie Baker limits gatherings of 25 or more people, workers ask what that means for their workplaces, daycares

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker’s announcement Sunday night banning gatherings of 25 or more people sent workers scrambling to find out what that means for their jobs, their children’s daycare facilities and preschools.

The executive order on gatherings — one of several issued Sunday to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus — prohibited “without limitation, community, civic, public, leisure, faith-based, sporting events with spectators, concerts, conventions, fundraisers, parades, fairs, festivals and any similar event or activity that brings 25 or more persons in a single room or single space at the same time.” Those spaces include auditoriums, stadiums, large conferences, fitness centers and theaters, to name a few.

Workers across the state initially questioned whether the restriction applies to workplaces in industries that aren’t explicitly mentioned in the order. The state Department of Public Health issued guidance Sunday night clarifying that the ban doesn’t apply to many offices and factories.

“The order does not apply to typical office environments, government buildings or factories where large numbers of people are present, but it is unusual for them to be within arm’s length of one another,” the DPH guidance states.

The DPH guidance also says the order doesn’t ban normal operations at airports, bus and train stations, medical facilities, libraries, shopping malls, pharmacies, grocery stores and other spaces where large groups aren’t congregated.

The distinction lies in the language used in the guidance: the restrictions apply to any event or activity that draws 25 or more people to a “confined indoor or outdoor space," but not any location where “25 or more persons may be in transit.”

What about the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives? Can the Governor of Massachusetts shut them down with an executive order?

So, when do these various group size limitations start applying to air flight?

The CDC and the WHO has studiously avoided telling the people the race, the age and the specific underlying medical conditions of those who have become seriously ill or who have died from COVID-19. Instead this litany of listing just the numbers of people “infected” but not ill gives no real information to people but certainly increases anxiety and panic.

Panic prevents people from acting rationally and inhibits the proper allocation of resources. People then behave in a predictable manner. They isolate themselves, hoard and shun even their relatives.

Exactly. First it was 500. Then it was 250, then 100 then 50 and now 25.

Totally arbitrary, and totally stupid.

I'm wondering who is going to "order" no more than 1 at any place at any time.

This hysteria is beyond out of control.

They are going to do their best to destroy our economy and blame Trump for any and everything related to Wuhan-19. This is their last hope to prevent him from being re-elected.

Based on the hysteria out there, I'm beginning to think the (D)'s and Independents that voted for him in 2016 will be panicked into not voting for him again.

What’s the difference between large social gatherings and being at work where they are addicted to meetings in conference rooms with 25 or 50 people? Aren’t the people who have been running around stocking up on TP at Costco and such all weekend capable of carrying the virus into the workplace as well?

At the govt bureaucracy where I work, we’ve been preparing for days for possibly teleworking - jumping through the paperwork, the forms, the training certificates, the justifications, etc. Tomorrow we will all probably be in yet another meeting about it, crammed in a conference room, possibly sharing the virus. Ha! It’s Idiocracy for sure.

The order actually comes from the CDC which revised its figures down over the weekend to advise no groups larger than 25 for EIGHT weeks to try to stop the infection outright.

The orders specifically do NOT apply to factories or other critical industry.
Trump would do well to make a public statement saying as much and the reasons behind the restriction that the states are making rather than let all these dictatorial governors shoot off their mouths as if they’re saving the world on their own. Get the country on one page and it would greatly help his image too. But I suspect he’s referring to Pence here who can’t craft a message to save his life.

Where do you see CDC guidance for 25 people? The CDC pages I’ve accessed still say 50. Link please. Thanks!

Good point. When this thing stalls out in the next month or so, they will no doubt come up with the next thing.

Pretty amazing what Trump has had to endure with everything and just about everyone in the fed gov involved in the ongoing coup to one degree or another.

Because tracking down any of the 9 of these statistically insignificant people in the U.S. is hard and their existence is psychologically outweighed by the 65 dead.

Yes. Catholic archdiocese in Boston
already had banned masses as of 4 pm Sat
(TV/ cable TV does have them) though
individual prayer and maybe confessions
are allowed. Catholic, Protestant, Jewish,
Muslim services affected. Unless there are
less than 25 attending, maybe?
