ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The body of Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, daughter of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, has been found four days after she and her son went missing after a canoe trip in the Chesapeake Bay.

After a search that spanned several days and involved aviation and underwater imaging sonar technology, authorities recovered McKean’s body Monday about 5:30 p.m. in 25 feet of water and about 2 1/2 miles south of her mother’s residence in Shady Side, Maryland, where the canoe was launched.

The Maryland Natural Resources Police will resume search operations Tuesday to continue searching for her son, Gideon McKean.

Sounds like no PFDs, in a canoe, on a windy day.

A canoe trip in the Chesapeake Bay?
They went after a soccer ball.
Small craft warnings were up at the time.
Kennedy stupidity takes another innocent life.

She was probably crab bait like her son.

Kennedy arrogance strikes again, and as usual, takes innocent lives.

is it just me or does the kennedy family have an above average propensity for accidental deaths?

"They went after a soccer ball."

Like they couldn't buy another ball, instead of climbing into a canoe in a bay they knew nothing about? After seeing your family devastated over the years with stupid accidents, you'd think they'd know better. Just a bit of common sense goes a long way.

She knew nothing about the bay? It’s her moms house.

An article I read quoted a neighbor who said they weren't familiar with the area:

"Sandy Shore resident, Roland, said he remembered the water Thursday being rough, with waves more than three feet high.

Roland told WJZ, for people who don’t normally live here, it’s easy to misjudge the waters in the Bay.

“They weren’t familiar with the area. They could have got out of the canoe and walked back to land if they knew it but it just didn’t happen that way, unfortunately,” he said Saturday.

I don’t get the needless cruelty of these comments. So ugly and uncalled for. This woman and her child were just leading their lives. She isn’t Teddy Kennedy.

Some people have lost their humanity moorings.

I dont see a single cruel comment by me on this thread. This mother made a rash, foolish decision that cost her life and that of her sons over a soccer ball. An 8 year old in a canoe without a life jacket?

I don’t understand how you die in a canoe, even without a vest.

Are Kennedy’s incapable of swimming a short distance or made of stone?

On a different note, the crab from that bay are tiny, have no meat, and getting at what meat they have smears them with crab poo.

They are as useful as a Kennedy.

What happened exactly. All reports only mention “strong winds.”

Did they get pushed very far from shore? Did canoe overturn? Too far to swim? What was water temperature?

I wonder what the water temperature was, and if that could have been a factor. I was always told that no matter how good a swimmer you are, always use a personal flotation device. I was also told that if the boat capsizes, stay with the boat (most recreational boats float). It was a needless tragedy.
