Peter Navarro: China 'cornered' the personal protective equipment market and 'is profiteering' during coronavirus outbreak
Fox News ^ | April 19, 2020 | Talia Kaplan

White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro said during an exclusive interview on “Sunday Morning Futures” that China "cornered" the personal protective equipment (PPE) market during the coronavirus outbreak and “is profiteering.”

Navarro, who is also the National Defense Production Act policy coordinator, made the comment on Sunday reacting to a recent Fox News report, which cited multiple sources, that there is increasing confidence that the COVID-19 outbreak likely originated in a Wuhan laboratory, though not as a bioweapon but as part of China's attempt to demonstrate that its efforts to identify and combat viruses are equal to or greater than the capabilities of the United States.

Navarro, who was one of the first to warn about the novel coronavirus, noted “China did [several things] over the course of this thing,” which, he said, “led to the deaths of many people worldwide.”

“First of all, the virus was spawned in China. Second of all, they hid the virus behind the shield of the World Health Organization. The third thing they did was basically hoard personal protective equipment and now they’re profiteering from it,” Navarro told host Maria Bartiromo, referencing the fact that many states have been dealing with a shortage of PPE for health care workers during the coronavirus crisis.

Sources believe the initial transmission of the virus – a naturally occurring strain that was being studied there – was bat-to-human and that "patient zero" worked at the laboratory, then went into the population in Wuhan.

The sources explained that there was an extensive cover-up of data and information about COVID-19 orchestrated by the Chinese government.

Yes, it is clever. Release a nasty virus, engineered in your labs into the world. Then profit from the market for the equipment that you have cornered.

IMHO, the Chi-Coms have screwed the pooch with their proved dishonesty. I read every day where some nation is re-thinking its trade policies with China.

Japan has created their own stimulus program for Japanese companies to bring production back home. They are offering the costs of those company'a expenses to re-locate. I would hope with all the trillions the US is spending that some of that will be for the return of American based companies production facilities.

Think of the jobs that will create for so many that have lost them possibly forever as small businesses close.

He’s right. The ChiComs spent a fortune early in the year buying up the international stock of PPE.

They even turned around and sold back to Italy the PPE that nation had donated to them earlier in the ChiCom Virus.

Not sure what it will take to wake people up. The DNC Media here is intent on deflecting from Red China and blaming President Trump for anything and everything.

"Well said, I agree."

Thank you. The silver lining in this awful situation is that the Chi-Coms will take years to be trusted again. The lack of trade could turn their imperialistic clock back a few decades. I suspect with return of American owned production facilities through tax incentives and direct Fegov relief and increased trade with other Nations, we may come out of this stronger and with better trading partners.

An interesting point is that campaigner Trump was already talking about over-reliance of China goods. He has been proven correct with the Ch-Coms limiting or denying medical and pharmaceutical supplies exports. That will now change.

I'm curious what authority he has to use the 2 trillion already passed for incentives to our own companies to relocate as Japan is doing. Is there enough for that? Or is it all going out to paychecks for the unemployed? Who is accountable for the disbursement of that stimulus?

I honestly think they sold back many of the masks that arrived here...churches and a ton of different groups back in February began gathering pallets off shelves here and shipped them back to China “to help”. Doctors offices, medical offices and hospitals also were asked by their Chinese suppliers to ship back any extras or not to take shipment at this time.

Honeywell has one US plant in operation in RI and another under construction in a former jet engine plant in Phoenix, 1000 US workers total.

Let them keep their shit and use it on their own people or others too dumb to become dependent on them. I’m waiting for one Dem politician to stand up and say it’s wrong for us to reshore medical device and drug manufacturing. Even AOC ain’t that dumb.

Who is accountable for the disbursement of that stimulus?

That's an excellent question that I hadn't thought about. The below excerpt are the key points of an article on it but it only covers the oversight for dispursement:

KEY POINTS
  • The Defense Department’s internal watchdog will serve as newly named chair of The Pandemic Response Accountability Committee, a body created to oversee the roughly $2 trillion stimulus deal that President Donald Trump signed into law last week in response to the economic devastation wrought by the coronavirus outbreak.
  • Glenn Fine’s job as chair of the committee will be “to prevent waste, fraud, and abuse” of funds allocated in the law.
  • Prior to joining the Department of Defense, Fine worked for eleven years as inspector general for the Department of Justice under both Democratic and Republican presidents.

Department of Defense watchdog will lead Inspector General committee for $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus package

Pres. Trump ought to call Xi and tell him the US debt to China is cancelled due to the cost of their COVID-19 imposed on our country.

“Pres. Trump ought to call Xi and tell him the US debt to China is cancelled due to the cost of their COVID-19 imposed on our country.”

I honestly believe that option is on the table.

One thing that can be done on an individual basis is to STOP eating fish or shrimp from China. We are importing over 90% of our seafood. Look on the back of the package in the grocery store. If it says: Product of China, its farmed raised crap. Does anyone think that s-— is fit to eat?
Even if I was sure it was a high quality product (not) I will never buy it after what they have done to this country...and the world.

You are completely right.

In fact not just here, around the globe.
