Analysis of Virginia COVID-19 Data
Virginia Department of Health ^ | 5-13-20 | jhl

The Virginia Department of Health recently added more detailed demographic and outbreak data to its Coronavirus data website.

The website only reports numbers, not percentages; but by doing a little simple math, interesting facts present themselves:

Statistics for Long-term Care Facilities (e.g. Nursing Homes):
58.8% of all deaths in Virginia were associated with Long-term care facilities.

Contracting the virus in a long-term care facility is not an automatic death sentence:

85.6% of patients who contract the virus in a long-term care facility survive.
This is contrary to the perception we are given, that outbreaks in a nursing home inevitably result in total death of all residents in the facility.

Death by age group:
91.4% of all deaths in Virginia were age 60 or above

If you are 60+, and catch the virus, you had a 87.8% chance of recovering.

If your are under age 60 and catch the virus, you had a 99.6% chance of recovering.

Statistical retrospective survival rate by age group (the probability that you would survive the disease if you were to contract COVID-19):

Age Group Survival Rate
80+ 75.7%
70-79 87.5%
60-69 95.4%
50-59 98.9%
40-49 99.6%
30-39 99.9%
20-29 99.9%
0-19 100%

As of this date, of the 927 reported deaths, no one in Virginia under the age of 20 has died from COVID-19.

Virginia's website does not report co-morbidity data, but it would be interesting to analyze the numbers associated with survival and no co-morbidity.

Personally, I think that looking at the numbers in terms of survival rate, versus death rate, paints a more optimistic picture of the situation, but others may disagree. Again, the percentages above are my calculations based on the raw numbers and demographic data posted on the VA Dept of Health website.

58.8% of all deaths in Virginia were associated with Long-term care facilities.

Nursing homes are the worst of the infection zones for COVID-19.

I find it incredible that schools are struggling with the decision to re-open. Young people do not die from this.

And if the kids have no school and have to stay home, then a parent probably has to stay home as well. We can’t “get back to normal” until people stop being afraid of nothing.

Viralginia’s numbers are climbing; 946 newly infected, and 36 additional dead today.

Congratulations, Obergruppenfuehrer Northam.

I know!

Everybody wear a black face and support killing babies after they’re born!

Then Ralph Northam will be happy for sure

Is Northam more like Hitler and Stalin, or Jefferson and Washington? We all know the answer. And that goes for most other Dem governors and officials, and you too DeWine!

Can you point me to the VDH page that shows the total cases, hospitalizations, and deaths by age group and summarized on one page?

Virginia is almost last in the US for testing ,
48th ,. Testing Numbers are just now increasing

Not sure how much value to place on this
States positive cases at this point.

Hospitalization and deaths are only true measure

Of course the weasel governor blamed Trump
for lagging test availability.

Thanks for compiling and posting this. This combined with the new “cases by zip code” lookup gives a much better picture of risk. My zip code has had ZERO cases, as have most of the surrounding ones. One adjacent zip has had 1 to 4 (VDH suppresses the exact number if less than 4 for “privacy” reasons — which makes no sense). It seems that this blanket lockdown has been counterproductive.

People at higher risk of death due to advanced age and co-morbidities should be protected carefully, while the bulk of the population go about their business, gets the disease, recovers, and develops herd immunity that ends the problem.

Well stated.
