New Jersey, the state with the second most number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country, experienced its first days with less than 1,000 new cases this week for the first time since March 25.

The state, which is planning to reopen in phases in the coming weeks, saw 798 new cases of the virus on Tuesday and 817 on Wednesday. On Thursday, however, 1,144 new cases were reported.

On March 25, the state reported 727 new cases, bringing its total then to just over 4,400. From there, the Garden State's number of daily COVID-19 cases skyrocketed, staying over 1,000 for roughly the next month and a half.

As of Friday, the state has almost 143,000 confirmed cases and nearly 10,000 deaths.

New Jersey's overall number of new cases for the week is down, and the daily number of cases has been trending downward, in general. This time last week the state had reported 9,918 new cases. This week, it's only 5,619.

The downward trend of weekly and daily cases is encouraging to state leaders, and this week Gov. Phil Murphy (D) outlined two parts of his phased reopening for the state.

And yet Murphy shows no willingness to release the restrictions.

Herd immunity, plus all the nursing home patients are probably dead by now.

Actually, Pamdemic Phil graciously is now allowing us to use the beaches and has just reinstated elective surgery and dental treatment. He’s still a first class jerk, but the reality of a $10B budget gap has hit home.

Been seeing this for a over a month now. The ER in southern NJ where I work has staff that’s just about bored stiff waiting for this ‘’tsunami of victims’’.

True indeed. This buck toothed grinning idiot knows damn well every Jersey Shore town from Sea Bright in the north to Cape May in the south depends on the revenue they make in the summer to tide them over through the fall and winter and unfortunately NJ is a Democrat stronghold. Murphy’s decision is purely political.

Do the elective surgery and dental visits come with fresh quarantine requirements?

The former do in NYS.

More meaningless numbers. How many hospitalizations? ICU hospitalizations?

I saw that they are allowing you to fish but not use a chair. Swim alone but not bring a chair. Basically you can go to the beach by yourself, jump in the water and then leave. I'm not sure if anyone is following those rules but that was what was on the sign posted on the beach a friend of mine lives near.
