China emerges as potential strain on US-Israel relationship

Increasingly close ties between China and Israel risk straining the special relationship Israel has with the U.S., especially as Washington ramps up its feud with Beijing over the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The historic alliance narrowly avoided a diplomatic fallout this week with Israel relenting to U.S. concerns and delaying a Chinese infrastructure project in the country, coinciding with a whirlwind visit by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Jerusalem.

While the U.S. has long expressed concern to Israel over its ties with China, Israeli officials have signaled they are not stepping back from relations with Beijing entirely.

Pompeo used his latest visit to highlight the risk of doing business with the Communist Party.

“We do not want the Chinese Communist Party to have access to Israeli infrastructure, Israeli communication systems, all of the things that put Israeli citizens at risk,” Pompeo said in an interview Thursday with an Israeli news channel, “and in turn put the capacity for America to work alongside Israel on important projects at risk as well.”

Chinese officials shot back, accusing Pompeo of raising the alarm on security risks “without producing any concrete evidence.” They called his comments "absurd" and expressed hope that Israel will defeat the “political virus.”

China's relations with Israel were thrust further into the spotlight on Sunday when the Chinese ambassador to Israel was found dead at his official residence in the city of Herzilya, north of Tel Aviv, from a suspected heart attack, according to Israeli officials. No foul play is suspected, though China is sending a team to investigate the death and collect the body.

Still, Pompeo's short visit came with a diplomatic win for the U.S.

Back in the 90's and the early aughts, the Israelis were involved in the attempted sale of the Lavi (an F-16 equivalent) design and the Phalcon (an AWACS equivalent) to the Chinese. They pulled back only after strenuous US objections. They are about to discover that even non-defense transactions with the Chinese are about to go through an equivalent level of American scrutiny. Slowly, but surely, an attempt is being made to revive Cold War-era Western vs Eastern Bloc trade patterns that severely limited trade with the West's principal adversaries. The difference now is that these adversary are now China and its closest associates/client states. In time, even Russia will have to choose - it can trade with China or the West, but not both.

Israel wants to sell things to China, plain and simple, and we share far too much defense information with Israel to allow them to have any defense ties with the CCP.

China is not good at inventing things, but they are masters at theft from others.

If the Left comes to power in the U. S., perhaps.

If not, Israel will always be a staunch ally. Of course
that depends on the RINOs doesn’t it.

As for Israel, they surely must be able to see the pitfalls
of teaming up with China. Oh my goodness...

Who would come to their rescue then?

I would be interested what portion of Chinese companies, which were formerly, American (but now just have a minority stake held by some former owner, now majority Chinese owned, and operated), are “owned” in minority, by way of various ethnic, religious or other groups.

Anyone know, offhand?

Every time an American looked at an item for where it was made in it came from China. Now China’s reliance making everything was being threatened by a change in leadership in America which was a major consumer of those products. When Americans hailed their leaders decision to make many of them in their country US. Their politburo worried.

Worse yet opponents to the Chinese regime in power had its citizens protesting its policies , as in Hong Kong, since that change in American leadership wave the American flag and present his name when doing so. All of which presented those in power the need to destroy that leader Donald Trump.

Would a runaway plague created by a nation which could threaten populations of an enemy cause them to react by demanding extreme restriction of movement by its population to prevent its spread ? Thus wind up fragmenting its economy and create defeat for that leader’s upcoming election.

Needless to say, Israel shouldn't even have relations with China. And for that part, neither should we.

Let Israel sell to China, do as they please. Just let them and all nations know that if they sell out to Huawei then we won't share intel with them anymore. Not out of retaliation but in recongnition of a stark fact: China lies and cannot be trusted. All of their stuff is loaded with spy stuff and if it becomes embedded in a nation's critical infrastructure than that nation can no longer be considered capable of protecting any intel we send them.

Let them factor that into their decision making and do as they will.

I don’t think so.

Israel needs to back off, with China.

This should all boil down to one thing for Netenyahu. Israel can annex any or all of the West Bank and Trump will back them to the hilt. Would China do the same?

If we told Israel that we’d cut them off from Intel they’d back off from China right quick IMHO.

That has to be the Gantz-Lapid morons.

God willing while Bibi has the helm first, they can catch Gantz/Lapid with some trannies and force them out.
