The Israeli chief medical officer of US biotech firm Moderna said Monday that its experimental anti-COVID-19 vaccine “actually works,” after tests on a small number volunteers, and that it will start Phase 3 testing on thousands of people in July.
“We got the first results today… and today we are showing that it actually works… we are able to stimulate the immune system,” Dr. Tal Zaks said.
In an interview with Israeli television, Zaks said he was confident that, toward the end of the year, “we’ll be able to present first results that prove that our vaccine indeed prevents the disease.”

Everyone will take it. Once it’s proven safe and effective. Could it be out by the end of the year if everything works out.

Correction - its a US biotech firm in Cambridge MA and the US government is among the funders.
Usually this kind of work takes years but we don’t have years and we can’t afford the costs of more human and economic devastation.
This is as important as the Manhattan Project was in the 1940s.
Is it pork based? If a medicine is pork based and there is no alternative it is kosher because saving a life is more important. But I’m not sure the moslems would have a similar opinion. And maybe that’s okay, right?

I suppose this vaccine will be added to the list of 17 or 18 that are already included in the special Vaccine Court they set up to deal with the tsunami of vaccine injury claims. That Court has paid out over $4 billion already in injury claims for vaccines that were safe and effective.
That would be unprecedented. But there’s never been such a deployment of scientific energy, either.
Moderna is based in Cambridge MA and is a US company. The reason they are able to move as quickly as they can on this vaccine is because they don’t actually work with the real virus to produce it. This is the most dangerous and difficult part of creating a virus because the researchers have to find a dead or impaired version of the virus to trigger the immune response that causes the host’s cells to make antibodies. If they don’t do it right they can infect the patient with a harmful pathogen which is unethical.
In Moderna’s case they work backward from the actual antibody protein structure and have a computer design the mRNA sequence of nucleotides that would produce it using the cells ribosome as the factory. They don’t need the actual virus but use a harmless, well tested substitute to carry the mRNA into the cells. This synthetic vaccine can’t make anyone actually sick since the carrier is not able to reproduce in the body.
Using the genetic code like this is a game changer that has never been seen before in medicine. The Chinese vaccines are all based on using dead viruses which is much riskier and harder to test safely.
