While some scientists have drawn a link between COVID-19 and the recent emergence of a rare inflammatory syndrome in children, some media reports and officials have overstated the certainty and nature of that link.
We know that we dont have all the data yet on this and its important that we actually prove causation before we definitively try and discuss this link, said Dr. Amesh A. Adalja, an infectious disease expert at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.
I would not be surprised if there is a link, but it hasnt been proven yet, he told NTD in an interview.
The New York State Department of Health is investigating 102 cases of the syndrome, similar to the rare Kawasaki Disease, causing inflammation in the skin, eyes, blood vessels, and hearts.
It has killed three young children in New York. Other regions, such as Italy, have also seen an increase in children presenting these symptoms.
Adalja said its possible there is some sort of mechanism between the two that possibly coronavirus infection sets off an inflammatory cascade that results in [the inflammatory syndrome in children.
But since the inflammatory syndrome has not occurred consistently throughout the pandemic but has instead appeared to spike recently, this suggests another factor may be at play, Adalja said. Not all cases of the syndrome have coincided with exposure to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus, which causes COVID-19.
Some journalists have stated the causal relationship between COVID-19 and the syndrome as a certainty.
NBC News New York reported that the number of children known to be developing a dangerous response to COVID-19 appears to be going up. CNBC published an article titled, Coronavirus inflammatory syndrome is causing heart and kidney failure in some NYC kids.

Fausti pointed to this rare event as a reason not to let us out of jail.
Has it ever been reported whether all or even any of these kids tested positive for SARS-COV-2? That would seem like an important and readily-available bit of information, but I haven’t seen it reported one way or the other.
Hopefully they’re being smart enough to use some of the accurate antibody tests to check these kids along with their peers (classmates, neighbors, friends) to see if everyone with this inflammatory syndrome has even had COVID-19 and also whether those positive test results actually mean anything (i.e. if all their peers test positive also, you have tons of noise in your data).
Now if the kids with the inflammatory syndrome all test positive and most of their local peers test negative, that points to a more likely connection. Stuff like this needs to be thoroughly investigated and either confirmed or debunked quickly since it helps guide decisions from both government and parents. To date, it seemed like kids didn’t have much to fear from COVID-19. It’s a lot less dangerous for them than the flu, for instance (something like 250 times less dangerous). But if complications like this are happening and are caused by SARS-COV-2, we need to figure out how best to respond and quickly.
Fast Forward to now...
Nobody's going to the hospital/doctor unless it's for the 'rona. And some of these kids happen to have this weird thing at the same time. Causation or correlation?
You don’t say...
On the local news here in suburbia MN they did claim that the disease is commonly linked with Covid-19 antibodies, which suggests that the child was exposed, was likely, but not always asymptomatic, but did have it. About a month after exposure (it is believed), the child spikes a fever and complains of body aches and has some signs of inflammation, sometimes a rash. They believe the correlation = caussation and are seeing this pattern with MIS-C diagnoses as of late.
I would imagine so called Covid Toe is related.
This would also help explain the seemingly more deleterious effects of Covid-19 in people who have autoimmune disorders that cause inflammation and where Hydroxychloroquine is also contraindicated (i.e. Ankylosing Spondylitis and psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis).
Unfortunately I belong to the group that has both (or all three if you want to go that far) contraindicated autoimmune disorders mentioned above. I take a biologic and a DMARD, both of which suppress the immune system response, so I might be a little more succeptible to Covid or other complications from it. The flip side is that since my immune system is suppressed, it might actually bode well for me WRT Covid-19 and the potential for immune system hyperactivity (cytokine storm).
Thats just my point. Commonly linked to doesnt mean caused by, and careful language like that makes me wonder whether any link has been established at all. There is an old legal axiom that temporal proximity, without more, is no evidence of causation. Just because this is happening during a Covid epidemic doesnt mean it is caused by or even related to the epidemic. Maybe these kids are being exposed to some environmental or behavioral conditions because of the lockdown, or maybe this is the result of some entirely unrelated source.
No rule that there can be only one epidemic at a time.
Here's a quote from an online article about the newscast I was referring to:
"Some of these children have tested positive for COVID-19, Lynfield said. Some did not test positive, but blood tests showed antibodies consistent with exposure to the virus. Some children also had family members who had been ill, and symptoms presented a number of weeks later."
source: MDH issues advisory on potential COVID-linked syndrome in children
Yes they are being cautious about this and stating that they have not confirmed either covid or antibodies in every single case in the world, but the evidence is pretty strong.
