OCONOMOWOC, Wis. (CBS Local) A Wisconsin woman who has taken hydroxychloroquine for 19 years to treat lupus says the anti-malarial drug will not protect someone from COVID-19.
Kim, who doesnt want to show her face or give her full name, says after the pandemic began, she only left her Oconomowoc home to go the grocery store.
But by mid-April, she started feeling coronavirus symptoms.
Weak all over. Coughing, fever. The fever was very high, she told WISN. It just went downhill from there. I couldnt breathe no more.
Kim said she tested positive for COVID-19.
When they gave the diagnosis, I felt like it was a death sentence. I was like, Im going to die,' she said. Im like, How can I be sick? How? Im on the hydroxychloroquine. They were like, Well, nobodys ever said that was the cure or that was going to keep you safe and it definitely did not.
Kim said even though she took precautions when leaving the house for the grocery store, she thought she would be safe because of what President Donald Trump has said about the drug.
Trump has repeatedly advocated hydroxychloroquine for possible treatment or prevention of COVID-19. On Monday, he revealed he had been taking the drug for about a week and a half.
A lot of good things have come out about the hydroxy. A lot of good things have come out. Youd be surprised at how many people are taking it, especially the front-line workers before you catch it, Trump said at the White House. I happen to be taking it. I happen to be taking it.
Im taking it hydroxychloroquine right now.

Kim, who was hospitalized for seven days, is mostly recovered now but is still on oxygen at her home.
I am so looking forward to the mainstream media cherry-picking stories related to COVID-19 until Election Day. /s
First look I’d take is ...
where did her Hydroxyc... come from ? China maybe ?
So, here’s the interesting question that arises after Trump said he is taking HCQ as a prophylaxis — DOES IT REALLY PROTECT AGAINST COVID-19 THE WAY IT DOES FOR MALARIA?
There are a ton of Americans taking HCQ right now for valid reasons, because they have lupus or a rheumatological condition. How many of them have gotten sick from Coronavirus? Thatll give us some basic sense of whether the drug works as a prophylaxis against the disease.
We might not even need a scientific test to find out.
Just hire a pollster to call people randomly and ask them:
(a) are you on hydroxychloroquine and
(b) have you been diagnosed with COVID-19?
Itd be interesting to see how many answer yes to both questions and how the share that got infected while using HCQ compares to the share of the overall population that got infected.

Ah, but lady, do/did you take zinc?
So would that story be considered anecdotal? LOL
Zinc deficient. A lot of people are.
Without zinc, HCQ is not nearly as effective.
Maybe HCQ, even with zinc, isn’t 100%. Aspirin is widely accepted for headache relief, but it doesn’t work for everyone.
As far as I could tell, the article didn’t say how old this woman was. The fact that she had lupus may have made her more vulnerable to the virus. But who knows. Like Trump said “What have you got to lose?”
How could she get it? Because it isn’t a hundred percent effective or a cure.
People take all kinds of medicine proven to help certain conditions, but people still get sick and die from those conditions.
Sometimes the drug itself kills them. It happens.
As another poster obliquely opined, this was simply a cherry picked hit piece using a woman who simply drew a short straw with respect to the drug.
That’s all.
This is anecdotal. ;-)
And....what other health issues might she have? And her age?
"No more"? It's "anymore". It's "I couldn't breathe anymore". It sounds stupid when you say it like that.
Yes. See my post above. I don’t understand why this is a difficult concept to grasp. I would think everyone understood this from personal experiences or those close to them.
There are very few wonder drugs that work 100% of the time.
Even if it is 99.9% effective, in a condition affecting a thousand people, that is one person who dies.
It is just how it is.
Probably no zinc intake.
Was she on the other meds too? Hydroxy alone is not the plan.
No one said it’s a 100% effective preventive. CBS is the worst.
19 years? But I thought hydroxy kills you.
