Trump: ‘I Will Override Any Governor That Wants to Play Games’ on Reopening Churches

When asked what authority he had in mind when threatening to overrule governors on reopening houses of worship, President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he “can absolutely do it” if he wants to.

“I can absolutely do it if I want to, and I don’t think I’m gonna have to, because it's starting to open up. We need our churches and our synagogue and our mosques. We want them open - churches, synagogues, mosques and others. We want them open, and we want them open as soon as possible,” Trump said during a White House Rose Garden press conference on protecting seniors with diabetes.

“I can tell you I know a lot of pastors, a lot of rabbis, imams. They want to take care of their people. They don't want anyone getting hurt or sick, and they're going to take care of their people. We need these people. We need people that are going to be leading us in faith, and we are opening it up and if I have to, I will override any governor that wants to play games,” he said.

“If they want to play games, that's okay, but we will win, and we have many different ways where I can override them, and if I have to, I'll do that, but we want our churches and our synagogues and our mosques et cetera, we want them open,” the president said.

Trump said it should be left up to pastors and churches as to whether they want to remain closed.

“Now there may be some areas, by the way, where the pastor or whoever may feel that it's not quite ready, and that's okay. That's okay, but let that be the choice of the congregation and the pastor,” he said.

I applaud President Trump for this, although I wish he said it 2 1/2 months ago.

He said that, "and we have many different ways where I can override them." Considering that the fascist left has already sent armed goons to band on church doors in Chicago (by orders of Lori Lightfoot), the President must be ready to Federalize the National Guard in states controlled by Democrats.

The Left will not allow this issue to go down without a fight.

Chicago pastor claims the mayor sent armed police in unmarked cars to bang on the church doors Sunday: It was ‘like the Soviet-styled KGB’ He's requesting help from the Justice Department

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot rejects President Donald Trump call to open churches

President Kennedy federalized the National Guard in Alabama, and it made him a historic hero.

President Trump must be prepared to give that same order. He cannot rely on Barr's glacial pace DOJ to do a damn thing.

Kennedy and Eisenhower before him federalized the National Guard to enforce court orders. I know of no constitutional authority which permits the president of the United States to send in Armed Forces because he disputes the action of the state governor.

Lincoln acted in time of war under war powers authority. Likewise Wilson and Roosevelt.

Instead the president is the chief of the executive branch of government and he can invoke the powers of the Department of Justice to pursue constitutional rights of parishioners if he sees fit. But I know of no warrant for the president to send in the 101 airborne.

I'd settle for one. Do it, don't talk about it.

My understanding is that Title 10 and Title 32 give the President the authority under homeland defense.

As far as I know there is none and we have The Posse Comitatus Act, United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385, original at 20 Stat. 152)

But that doesn’t mean that the Commander in Chief can’t make the order and have it happen.

Who is going to stop our military? But I assume the National Guard would be nationalized as you say.

What’s the president going to do about mail in voter fraud? Once it’s a fait accompli there’s no going back. Even massive, obvious fraud will be accepted. I can recall blatant examples of fraud but never have I seen the results corrected to overcome the fraud. Brenda Snipes ham handedly did it every year and was never held accountable nor was her handiwork ever rolled back. Trump better have this stopped before the November ballots ever get sent out.

All President Trump has to do is have his Justice Department order the arrest by US Marshals of those Governors for violating the citizen's civil rights. Try them at Gitmo, sentence them to a few decades at Gitmo.

HalfWitmer first Mr. President. Please.

I agree. I don’t understand why he hasn’t already. I get that the governors are over the states, but the U.S. Constitution supersedes governors’ dictates, doesn’t it? If not, why do we bother with the Constitution?

And these RAT governors believe they rule over the people. In reality, the people rule them.

Barr’s modus operandi:

Step 1: Be appalled

Step 2: Play bagpipes

You’re right, he’s hopeless.

To protect the first amendment rights of the population?

One of the primary purposes of the Federal Government is to protect our God given and Constitutional Rights.

President Trump would be well within his powers in over-riding Democrat Governors such as JB Prickster here in Hellinois. Many on both sides of the political aisle would welcome him doing so.

He can act to ensure that each state continues to function as a representative form of government and to ensure that the Constitution is not being violated by said states. He can absolutely emergently act to ensure that constitutional rights are being upheld. The courts could always make their rulings later.

I heard a constitutional expert yesterday who said that the Commerce Clause was written for situations like this. He didn’t expand on that enough though.

This is exactly what Trump should do.

The government used the commerce clause to enforce civil rights legislation. The DOJ said segregation was detrimental to commerce and then enforced desegregation. This was bogus of course, but should be cited as precedent for cutting off dictatorial governors. Let the left take him to court and argue. He’d have the high ground from every average American that has to work for a living. Working people are the people who vote for Trump. He needs to stand up for their jobs. Democrats don’t give a shit about them.

The commerce clause has dominion over interstate commerce and what governors are engaged in is unconstitutional. Trump should simply state that fact and declare As of today, I am forcing the entire opening of all businesses in the country.

Teddy Roosevelt understood this strategy when he conspired to recognize Panama as new country. He said: “I eliminated debate of the issue and left them to debate me.” Trump needs to do same.
