Russian warplanes in Libya could open new phase in Middle East's biggest proxy war
L.A. Times ^ | 5-31-20

The warplanes, a mix of at least 14 MiG-29 fighters and Su-24 fighter-bombers, appear to have taken off from a base in Russia sometime in the middle of May and flown to Hmeimeem, Russia’s airbase on Syria’s Mediterranean coast. There they were repainted, their Russian Federation Air Force markings obscured, before flying more than 1,200 miles and landing in eastern Libya, in territories controlled by Russia’s ally, strongman-in-waiting Khalifa Haftar.

The deployment, which the Pentagon revealed last week and Moscow denied, is the latest in a series of escalations that have seen all types of weapons — Turkish and Emirati drones, Russian anti-aircraft systems, Jordanian-made armored vehicles — enter Libya’s Mad Max-like battlefields, in often-blatant disregard of a nine-year-old arms embargo.

US cities are burning down from domestic terrorism, but GOP neocons and Obama/Clinton liberals (including LA Times) want us to focus on turmoil in the Middle East.

They care about every country but America

If Russia wants to be the ring master of the Syria circus they can have it.

I fail to see any strategic importance the US has there. We have better things to do.

Russia having an outpost in Libya gives them control of more oil, and allows them to intimidate Europe from a new direction.

These dont even have to be IN Libya to be effective: https://www.army-technology.com/projects/patriot/

Plus the 6th fleet has SM-2 block IIIb equipped ships.

And the AWACS can see the taxiing. Theres no terrain to hide them.
No worries.

Thank you for Libya and Bengazi, Resident Obama, Secretary of Fate Hillery Clinton, and National Security Reviser Susan Rice.

Vladimir Putin:"How do you like me now?"

NATO was misused by our treasonous Resident, and now NATO must pay the price with the exposed soft underbelly of Europe.

Italy will likely be the first to receive ominous numbers of refugees escorted from North Africa by the non Russians in Libya, followed by France and Germany.many infected with the Wuhan virus.

You have to hand it to Putin on strategery. He knows what crotch to kick when he sees it.

That’s a little melodramatic. Black mobs doing a little undocumented shopping aren’t exactly a new phenomenon. Neither are white anarchists and communists breaking a little glass. Nor are Democratic pols covering for this slice of their voters being the vandals and criminals that they are.

We are plenty equipped to put down this disorder down. Republican pols can’t do anything because they’re not the people in charge of these Democratic cities. Plenty of resources available to Democrat pols who are in charge, but they don’t want to alienate their voters.

It always burns out eventually, because the sources of the mobs, which always go after their neighborhood merchants rather than to white neighborhoods where they might be shot where they stand, eventually encounter resistance from other locals who now have to go miles out of their way to go shopping. At that point, the locals start targeting the mobs by calling the cops, etc. And that’s when the cops step in and start arresting everyone involved. It’s an old pattern that repeats over and over.

What happened in major cities the last couple of nights is more destruction and damage to our national security than ANY of the Middle East countries have done to our homeland. (Except maybe for Saudi Arabia, where the 911 culprits came from). But our GOP neocons and ObamaClinton Dems want our minds focused on the Middle East , that’s their warped idea of “national security”

The federal government was established to protect America from invasion and domestic insurrection — not to do regime change wars in the Middle East

The use of massive bombing raids in Syria has had little apparent impact on the civil war. One problem is these high-tech devices are meant to fight other high-tech devices, not individuals on the ground who are not even wearing uniforms to identify who they are. The opposition will rapidly move to more decentralization and then the Russians will be spending the equivalent of thousands of dollars per hour and millions in ordinance to attempt to neutralize targets they can hardly identify even on the ground. This will be like fist fighting with the air.

Which probably would not happen had the European powers and the U.S. not overthrown Gaddafi and created the mess in the first place.

Under the Bush administration the U.S. made peace with Libya, accepted their apology for terrorism, and signed agreements for trading products.

Flash forward a few years and Obama broke the agreement and proceeded to help destroy Libya and giving our enemies all the more reason not to trust our word.

One thing always holds true, neocons never learn.

That was a war crime torture abuse and murder of a POW.

And the Sec. of State gloated about it taking credit for his death and the actions of the lynch mob.

The Left claims that they are anti-war and anti-violence and they are full of sH1t. They also claim that the world would be a peaceful place if women (like Hillary) ran things.

Again with the melodrama. We had similar things happening on a larger scale in the past, including the 60’s and 70’s, when hundreds of bombs were being detonated a year, and we’re still standing.

The only permanent solution to the problem of black riots is to deport blacks back to Africa. That’s not happening even if we zero out the defense budget so the Russians can add oblasts at will to their empire. This stuff is small change, and part of the occasional need of the black population to push for legal impunity, which isn’t going to happen. White liberals may be sympathetic, but there is no way they are going to consent to letting blacks rob and kill them without being punished.

I might have agreed with you--except someone has pointed out to me that if the Russians can establish a permanent base in Libya, they can station anti-ship missile batteries protected by SAMs to threaten NATO's southern naval flank.

So, while I generally don't care about who runs Libya--it had better be people who aren't in bed with Vlad the Invader.

You post, “Russia having an outpost in Libya gives them control of more oil, and allows them to intimidate Europe from a new direction.” I gather you would prefer — Turkey having an outpost in Libya gives them control of the Islamist movement that maintains a hold on Tripoli and Misrata and intimidates Europe from a new direction.
